ive always done em slighty wider than shoulder width, toes spread out a little to the side, ive been trying the close stance toes straight legs parrellel way and when i get down more like close to thighs parrel witht the floor i can really feel my lower back doesnt like it, i can do them with light weight fine but the heavy it seems like a no no for the back, who can do em heavy all the way down for reps? dont know if its just me cuz i can do close stance on the presses fine but so can most

I can only do close stance squats in a smith machine. I tried free squats like that, but no go.

The mechanics of a front barbell squat and a rear barbell squat are different - I assume by "squat" you mean a squat with the bar on your back? If so, be sure your knees are squared up over your toes all the way down - it's fairly common to see the knees flare out when one is switching to a more narrow stance. When you look at the mirror, you should see your knees go to your toes in a straight line (do not allow your knees to flare out beyond your toes. If this is an issue it's possible that it's partly responsible for the stress on your back, plus a recipe for an injury down the road if your body gets used to squatting incorrectly.

I do my hack squats close stance.

i love close stance squats..its weird bcos im not really that much off in weight as with my regular squat(shoulder width)

I squat close stance I dont really feel that comfortable with wide i do em every once in a while but don't like em when i do close stance i feel my outer quad is targeted more

I used to do them close stance with my heels on a 2x4.
Made my quads blow up, but destroyed my knees.
Learned to do it that way from Paul DeMayo...RIP.

I do them both narrow and medium stance.. I usually go a little bit lighter with the narrow stance and I won't lock out keeping constant tension.

Yeah, what's the final word on these? Are they bad for the knees?

You still have bad knees just from doing these?

I know Gironda's sissy squat throws your knees way past your toes. Tough to use a lot of weight though.

My knees are junk - 20 years later.
Quads are still an easy 28+" with hardly any training though...
:( :)

narrow squats work the lateral head of the quads more intensly than shoulder width stance(works the entire quad more evenly) and wide(which works the inner thigh and glutes more). once you do squats one way for a long time it makes it harder to do the other way because you use different muscles as the prime mover in the action of the exercise.

changing the stance on different exercises like shoulder width for squat, narrow for hack, and wide stance for leg press can really help you shape the quads up and get more cuts at all angles.
