I developed decent shoulders with incline bench pressing not very upright like some people incline bench, and multiple sets ( 6 ish +) of cable side raises. 8-15 reps.
I haven't done OHP or any overhead press in over.... 8 or 9 years? I did some upright rows but not very often. Always laterals. mostly dumbells. some machines.

some sort of front raises
some sort of side raises
some sort of lateral raises
cables ,dumbbells , hand position, angles, rep ranges, advanced training techs. so so many variables. I now pair delts after chest and after back twice a week. after chest its front and side and after back its side and rear so laterals get twice the work. as i do front after chest they get the 'pressing stimulus' from chest press exes . 15-20 min is my shoulder session now. twice a week. love it. caps improved. not killing my already torn labrum any further. been good 1.5 to 2 years now i think i stopped doing OHP.
advice to young cubs :-
save your rotator cuffs and labrums. its not nice when u ge shown a type 2 labrum tear on your shoulder MRI scan. even if you want to do OHP as it feels fucking great to press some heavy iron ( i agree) do them may be 1-2 times a month as a TREAT.
I was a shoulder training junkie at one time i know how much it sucks if you have to abandon them totally.
I use to do OHP behind my neck. I think that was strictly my ego because let's face it. It does look cool ...... Now I don't do anything behind the neck..
I did OHP on the smith machine last night. Just like Pit was saying I set the stoppers around chin or face level. Plus on a smith it looks like I can do mad weight. I went in there thinking I wasn't going to do them but Not! I just can't see me getting rid of them. Upright rows then front and side lateral raises. I did rear delts on the chest fly machine. My shoulders were screaming when I got out of there... I love shoulders :headbang:
