I was 12 years old when my Father finally gave in, and purchased me a set of barbells - sand-filled numbers, with 2 dumbells to go with them...I remember it as though it were yesterday.

The inspiration came from seeing Steve Reeves in the movie "Hercules Unchained". I recall being very interested in the Charles Atlas ads in the back of comic books too.
Are you old enough to remember this?

I also remember being blown away by a photo of Larry Scott on the cover of "Iron Man" magazine.

...good memories.

JB:p

like most arnold was my first inspiration. just the medias fault really, first great body Ive ever seen.

I didn't get interested in bb'ing until later in life. I saw Frank Zane and Mike Mentzer as commentators on TV for a bb'ing show in Cali.

I was very impressed with Frank and followed his career - truly the "Giant Killer." Unfortunately, these days, you need to be a "Monster Killer!" :)

id have to say big lou in the hulk first time i ever saw a bodybuilder

Arnold was one of my favs but the dude who's physique I really thought was the best on the planet when I was young was Lou Farigno(sp?) the incredible hulk was the stuff and he beat people up and broke shit!!! Man that dude was the best!!!!!!!

Frank Zane worked out in my grandfather's little gym a few times with him so naturally he was my first favorite or first BB I ever even knew about for that matter.

Now days my favorite is Lee Priest. He isnt the biggest guy but his physique is incerdible and he has a small waist without the 'steroid belly" that most of the pros have now.

yep, Arnold
conan the barbarian.

Growing up and seeing movies and what not I never thought much about body building in it's self. I looked at sports figures more often than not. But when I was in my teens I became more interested in BB and would have to say that Victor Richards was the shit. I also liked the German, Roman (pronounced, but not spelled) Sherlock. And you have to also enjoy a young Shawn Ray

lol , yeah , definitely arnold ! lol , from all the movies :) .

who was it I think atlas was his name my grandfather used to go on about those guys all the time and about the good old days. I think my fav now is lee priest also because iam shortas hell also. I think he gives hope to all of us shorter guys that we can compete with our taller counterparts

Gatta join the group and say Arnold. Noone will ever be 'the man' the way he was. Watch Pumping Iron if you dont know what I mean. With all his fame and fortune-he still gives his all to the sport-someone who does not forget his roots and beginnings; as evidenced by the spectacular Arnold Classic. In fact the 2 men I admire most are Hugh Hefner, and Arnold. :D

All of you guys are making me feel bad for not saying Arnold :(

Of course Arnold is one of my favorites. The question was who was your "FIRST" favorite.

xcel

Arnold of course. I remember watching Terminator and being scared to death of him.

I think it's safe to say that everyone grew up at differnt times, and there were different people in the spot light during those times!, for me personally it was "Dennis Newman" the kid had it all!!
