Why are so many pcp’s idiots?

This 100 percent true statement, I know 2 people now that have been prescribed Adderall because they told their pcp that they have been tired all day long no matter what they do.

both are over 35 years old

I had a Dr respond to my question withan "I don't know" once. I respected him for thst. My present HRT Dr. has told me Dr.s don't like me because I know more then they do.........I like having my ego stroked!

Yeah, it is good to have doctors like that. Many of mine are like that thank goodness. The medical professionals I seem to have the most trouble with are the Nurse Practitioners/Physician Assistants (PAs). They seem to have that know all attitude. Ive run into some good ones but many not so good.

That's too bad. My current PCP is an NP and shes great. She listens to what I have to say and is willing to try what I want. I was on losartan and not getting anything from it...I asked to please try telmisartan because of all the other health benefits it provides besides just BP reduction. She said she hadn't heard of it so give her a few minutes so she could go research it as she wasn't comfortable prescribing without some knowledge of it. She went out for about 15 minutes and came back and was like, ok sounds good lets give it a shot. Ive been using it about 2 years now and its great

Yes, they're bad a lot of the time. I've heard some hilarious stuff when they checked my hematocrit for blood donation, like saying to stop drinking protein shakes (lol)

LOL. Back when I had my esophagitis real bad and food would get stuck in my throat I had one tell me that I could just do the Heimlich maneuver and get the food to come out that way.

Yeah as far as adderall, I'm back in grad school for pharmacy and have a dozen friends, both grad and undergrad, that went to their docs (me included, although I actually do have ADD as well) and just asked for adderall. Everyone got it no problem. Opioids are now the primary concerns by far and other stuff is getting overlooked a lot

I'll chime in because I am one of these MD's (urologist), and this is one of my biggest pet peeves.

I have been baffled in my 2 years of practice how ignorant most physicians are on TRT. It borders on the level of malpractice.

If they are worried about lawsuits, etc, then they shouldn't be prescribing it at all, and should simply claim ignorance. I don't prescribe medicines out of my expertise, nor should they.

I have had COUNTLESS guys come to me who were screwed over by their PCP's with regards to their TRT. Makes my blood boil every time.

Was speaking with a buddy at the gym this week who can't come see me in town as we're not on his insurance. he cannot get his doc to prescribe him his TRT WEEKLY (is getting every other). He can split it up himself but the dose would then be very low for him. So now he's forced to buy black market test through the gym just to supplement. It's pathetic that it has to come down to that, especially for guys who aren't really wanting to blast gear.

So I am constantly asking myself this question about "why are PCP's such idiots".

We do not get any decent teaching on TRT in medical school, it is something you really just have to seek out and learn yourself. Even in urology residency we were not taught the ins and outs of TRT.

And I will say that as far as my own experience, most endocrinologists are just as ignorant when it comes to testosterone replacement.

It's a sad state of affairs. If you can find a good doc or NP that knows what they're doing AND is willing to work with you - hold on to them tightly.

MD's like you give me hope. Thanks for fighting the good fight.

generally speaking, you need to be diagnosed with ADD or ADHD by a clinical psychologist in order to get Adderall nowadays.

at least in the US

Regulations definitely are tightening up a bit indeed. Finessing a small script is still relatively easy if you're a younger guy though. The biggest crackdown is with the opiate painkillers. If you don't come in with X-ray scans and fully documented injuries, you're getting zilch; at least, if we're referring to a legitimate medical practice rather than a south florida pill mill like a decade ago.

Hell, my mother in law just had her 2nd hip replacement and she is 79 years old. They gave her all kind of shit over getting just hydrocodone. Forget oxys.

This is just another example of a doctor more concerned with his agenda than your health.. They're some old dogs out there and they're not down with new tricks.

I recently had my physical with a new doctor (who informed me he was leaving the practice after less than a year). When I told him I was on TRT his whole demeanor changed. He started lecturing me about all the sides and getting my PSA’s checked. I told him he’s seen my bloodwork and that it was excellent on 160mg. He said “we like to do things naturally around here.” He said Test can cause Sleep apnea...I had previously mentioned I occasionally snore. I told I don’t have sleep apnea as I’m fully refreshed when I wake up. It’s sad that even after seeing the numbers, this guy had to put TRT down. Have you ever heard of a PCP prescribing Test? I got my script from a clinic.

Somewhat related, this article instantly made me think of this thread. This severely overweight doctor was 'shocked' that intermittent fasting actually works. It's pathetic doctors have such poor knowledge on such basic concepts - **broken link removed**

I had the same experience. I wasn't looking for adderall, I was just telling my doctor that I was working long hours every day and was having trouble staying alert while driving. Next thing I knew I had a script for adderall. That shit made me vomit for over 24 hours straight. I never took another one. Provigil and Nuvigil were better suited but pricey. They made me uncomfortably jittery at first but I got used to them after a few days. I liked the Nuvigil best, it was easiest on my nerves but insurance wouldn't cover it.

Interesting reaction. I've dry heaved many times after a bender but never directly as the effects were coming on.
