Why does red meat make me hungry?

This is something I often experience and was curious if others notice it as well.
After eating a good steak of nearly any size (100g to 1000g) I am ravenously hungry about 20-30 minutes later. It doesn't matter what accompanies the meal in terms of carbs or veggies.

I had a 200g steak for lunch the other day with rice and veggies, as I often do at a place near the office. 15 minutes after I get back to my desk my stomach starts grumbling.

This only happens when I eat a steak or other quality red meat (ie, not after a McDonald's burger). There is no such affect after chicken, pork, fish. etc; only read meat.

I speculate something in the red meat is kicking up my metabolism (indeed I often feel quite warm after eating red meat) but I have no way to empirically prove this.

Anyone else notice a similar effect?

this is just conjecture on my part

red meat contains high quality protein, in my opinion there is no equal for quality protein from a whole food source. it also contains lots of creatine, heme iron (a very usable form), tons of other nutrient goodies. when you injest this, your body senses this intake of good food and releases hormones to make you hungry to eat more.

kinda like how we have a natural taste for salt and fat, these things were not easy to come during our evolution, but they are necessary - so we devlop a 'taste' for them. by taste i mean when you find some your body says 'gorge yourself'

unfortunately with all the processed food containing excessive salt and fat, that evolutionary survival tactic works to our disadvantage.

I'm pretty sure the cooking effects the amount of nutrients that are took in too. I thought at one time I had read that rarer meats (Cook wise) were higher, than the well done ones. I'm actually kinda asking a question here instead of stating a fact. I can't remember how much of a difference there was between the two, and I might be off totally. I believe the article had something to do with us being carnivores and our bodies weren't really adapted to eat the well cooked meats, and was more suited for the rarer ones. Then again the writer might be full of crap too. I don't remember it completely, it's been a long while since I've read that.

All I know is I like my steaks fairly rare.

Is it "fresh red meat" from the grocery store, or does it come from a restaurant?

Either or, but always rare to medium rare.

As Captain Kirk has said, Red meat is a good source to iron as well as b vitamins. Both of which contribute to hunger.

this is one of the more bizzar questions i have seen on here....? me personally after eating a big steak will not be hungry for several hours as my body is trying to digest it. sounds like a tapeworm

This is related to the amount of fat you have on your steak (in most cases). For example I can trim the fat off a bottom round and not feel nearly as full as I will with a t-bone steak (with plenty of "marbling") weighing the same amount.

probably right then, i prefer a ribey with fat all around and through it

This happens to me too. No matter how big the fucking steak is, my stomach is grumbling and I'm hungry in about 20 minutes. It eventually goes away but it's a weird thing!!

Funny you should mention this. I was going to ask.

I'll make you a bet; order it medium well next time (I know it's not nearly as good that way), and then see what happens. You'll then have empiracle evidence that your body was just making a fuss trying to break down the relatively un-cooked meat.

I bet you your stomch won't be grumbling then.

Also, what do you drink when you eat this?

*LOL*...I notice the same thing...Maybe they are slipping MSG in it...I know tho that protein in general gets me parched...If I'm not hydrated to the max, after eating protein, especially steak, I get thirsty and hungry...

The thing is i absolutely love red meat. I get lean sirloin and have it grounded up into hamburger. If i am bulking up, i can eat 12-14 oz of that at least two times a day. I love hamburger and the thing is, i absolutely blow up while eating it. And the strength gains are pretty impressive for me too.

Just my 2 cents
