Will a muscle still grow if the tendon is torn?

I tore my distal biceps tendon around 4 years ago and couldn’t get it fixed at the time due to work. I stoped training biceps after that but still do some forearm exercises here and there. Anyways, now I can really notice my arm with the tear is smaller.

Will the biceps still grow in the arm with the tear? Or is it not worth training at this point.

The other muscles that assist in arm flexion will grow. I've had this happen with some tears. It will not look symmetrical if that is what you are worried about. Due to the distal biceps being torn you are also going to have some shoulder instability, but I'm sure you have already found that out.

Does anyone know...can a torn still be worked on surgically years later? What's the max amount of time that can pass but a surgeon can still go in and do some repair?

It's really a case-by-case basis.

Generally, the longer you let a tear go, the harder it is to repair. But then you have guys like Toney Freeman who went 5 years with a torn pec, found a good doctor who repaired it, and THEN turned pro and had a good career.

This. The right doctor is huge. As a guy who has had 5 tears, the right doctor is crucial and can work miracles even after a significant period of time.

it depends...

if you have your mri report they will noted of the lacertus fibrosis was torn or not. If not then it can scar down distally and it can act as a new anchor point but not as strong as before for the biceps brachii. If the lacertus as torn and it was complete tear with retraction proximal to that point the biceps brachii is not longer pulling on your radius soooo ofcourse you cant grow it in that sense. In a very VERY minimal aspect it may act as some shoulder flexion given its proximal attachments but thats minimal.

If lacertus is torn then any growth would be via brachialis and brachioradialis.

if you have a biceps tear and wait too long you already get fatty atrophy or scarring and then it cant be repaired to any appreciable degree. each case is different so it doesnt matter who had what repaired 4 year after and is doing well... it depends on the type of tear and the associated anatomy.

Look up my post on my complete quad tear that was repaired a decade later. You will function once recovered (as you probably see now) but it will not grow. The atrophy is there, if you get it reattached there is the chance you can work some muscle back.
I was still leg pressing 1000+ lbs with the torn quad, got it fixed 4 years ago now but size is slow to come back (if at all). I do have to have a revision on the tear (so I have been told).

There is a biceps tendon transplant procedure you may be eligible for.

I’ll give you my story. I tore mine and couldn’t get repaired due to work same as you. I completely quit training biceps go about 5 or 6 years. This year I started to have pain in my elbow so I went to a specialist. They took the necessary shots to see what he issue was. The doc told me that it had a torn tendon that had reattached and you could see the reattached location was smaller and thinner. Long story short the doc had me do PT for six weeks. He said the surgeons won’t even consider surgery until that occurs. End result is that the decision was made that I would be better off leaving it be for now because there were no guarantees that it could be properly repaired

I think it will still grow but will not look like your other biceps or be as strong unless it is
reattached identical to your other arm, if possible. And I don't know if time is a factor here
regarding when the tear occurred and reattachment.

i worked out with a guy for many years who tore his right biceps, did not get it repaired
and it destroyed his pro baseball career. His biceps took on a different shape when flexed
and it did effect his strength in that arm but I don't remember it looking any different
in a relaxed position.

Personally, I would keep training it as you will see some growth and strength gains but to
what degree I haven't a clue.

Forgot to mention. When we we doing barbell curls, his bar was always sloping down
towards his weaker right arm, his stronger arm up up in the contracted position while
his right arm was playing catch-up ,and got to the top with a bit of a 'cheat'.

Compound movements did not seem to be a problem if memory serves.

He was still pissed off at the surgeon but one never really knows the story behind the story.

so there seems to be some misconceptions here. If your bicep looks disformed you have ruptured the tendon, this is not a muscle tear. Rupturing tendon needs surgery to reattach it, it wont heal on it own, any doc or someone that say it will heal and you will recover is whack. Im sorry that you never got it fixed, and I dont know if you still can, I would reach out to as many docs as you can to try. It took me a month before I could get mine fixed since i didn't have insurance. My question though is why did work impacts you from getting it fixed, i imagine your performance is suffering, your pulling ability is greatly compromised.

IO have one arm missing a bicep attachment point they cut the tendon when doing a shoulder surgery long story shot its a different shape but it is still larger and stronger if I am training it than if not training it if you just give up atrophy will be twice as bad
