Working Triceps with Elbow pain

I saw these on a Charles Glass video, and it has helped my elbows out big time. Do decline barbell skull-crushers and decline dumbbell skull-crushers. The pain is a fraction of what it once was and they work. I do about 8 warm up sets on the cables until I jump into these and after the declines I go to close grips etc. My elbow are much better and my tris look better too.

Skulls on a decline is the only way I ever do them. Way less stress on the elbow and more on the tris where it should be.

Your volume and or frequency could be too high as well. Earlier this year, my right elbow was fried. Had sharp pain while training and dull pain all the time. It wouldn't even extend all the way. I decided to cut my volume way down and try Big A's growth principles for beginners with just a couple exercises for triceps and one work set each. My intention was to maintain my strength while the elbow got better. Much to my surprise I got stronger every single workout on every body part for five weeks! And my elbow got better, so like a true genius I ramped up the volume and it hurts again! Guess I'm a slow learner.

I have had surgeries on both elbows and my left is permanently fucked up. The things that have worked for are: 1.) I use a Rehaband elbow sleeve(got it from apt wristraps or something like that; they are sponsor here). 2.) I don't do any exercises that cause pain. Try different handles, different angle, etc.. until you find one that works.

As many have already said, this sounds like tendonitis. Your best bet is going to be rest. I occasionally get tendonitis in my elbows, which I find is often during periods where I am overtraining triceps.

I'd lay off triceps and pressing movements for a couple weeks...will most likely be good to go following that.

I have used tennis elbow braces in the past as well with moderate success. You could also try that.

And of course if rest doesn't resolve the issue, it may be something to see an orthopedist about.

Good luck! Aches, pains, and injuries suck to deal with in this sport!

Pain is your body sending you a message.

Rather than trying to work through, it is probably smart to figure out the root of the problem - what is causing the pain?

If it's a simple tendinitis, look into deep tissue massage, ART work, rest, ice, etc.

I have issues with my elbows quite frequently throughout the year, and some good deep tissue work often makes a huge difference.

^ This! You could also try wrapping it in Rock Tape. Works wonders for me.
