I lost my job about a month ago, so i decided to apply to Target to be just a regular employee and make some money until I find a new job.

I go in for a first interview, good, second interview went really good. The second guy told me I was overqualified and asked if i wanted to be a team leader (supervisor) or executive team leader (store manager) I said yes.

He said he would set up the interviews I might qualify for that position. So I had a third interview with a lady higher up, it went great. Then she called the entire store manager to interview me. He was a complete dick and asked questions I was not prepared for at all and I was nervous and it went horrible. It lasted 10 mins, then he told me they would call me and showed me the door.

I know i didnt get any of the manager jobs b/c the store manager (last interview) didnt like me and all my answers were terrible (after the first interviews were perfect).

They have to offer me the original job I applied for, correct? Justt an hourly job? Im afraid I might not even get that job, because he just asked me to leave, no piss test. Meanwhile everyonelse who was there to interview (just for hourly jobs) got piss tested.

All i really want is the job I originally applied for and I might not get that. How can they not give it to me of they liked me so much they had me interview for 2 positions above the one I applied for?

what kinds of questions was the topdog asking you

frankly they dont have to give you anything...why would they have to give you the first job...they thought you were overqualified...i get that one a lot in line of work im in and that is reasoning for not getting some of these jobs i just want to take in the "meantime" you know

you dont wana work at that shIthole anyway.............ive been out of work 7 months, id live on the street b4 i worked at target or wal mart

x2. However I'd like to hear the Q's the big cheese was asking and how you answered them.

Get a job at GNC or Hi-Health. You will probably be able to snag a ton of product for yourself that's supposed to be used for promos, free samples, etc. These kinda perks can ease the pain of working for a crappy hourly wage.

He wasnt reading from the book he was just shooting questions at me like he was so skeptical of me. About my last job, how i was only at it for 14 months, just talked down at me and kinda looked at the side (similar to rolling eyes) when I answered. Asked me what ive been doing for the past month out of work (i told him ive been doing some pers training, my degree is ex science), he then asked me if it was paid and how much i made like I was lying to him. Stuff like that.

So for jobs like target etc, should I not tell them I have a bachelors degree? I used to be a teacher, I guess i will have to leave that experience off my resume since it will let them know I have a bachelor degree? Maybe say I was just doing pers training the past few years?

i would have layed into him to be honest, "what have you been doing for the last month" lol, what are you my fin dad? sounds like a real douche

some of these managers of stores tend to go overboard on their "career"

You may have been stereotyped.

My guess is, you are probably a big guy. Men are very insecure. There are more psycho-social studies showing that men may be more insecure and more vain than women. I'm thinking the guy was intimidated by you.

I'm 6'1, 240lbs. I have my share of bodyfat, don't get me wrong, but I'm also fairly muscular with a barrel chest and very wide shoulders. My point is, I don't know how many times I've had guys give me attitude b/c they were intimidated or stuck out there chest as I walked by, etc.

Even though you did well with the other interviews, I think the guy was insecure and also stereotyped you as probably being either a "dumb" bodybuilder or whatever along those lines.

Sounds logical. The guy doesn't know you from squat other than his superiors liked you. He saw you as competition for a variety of variables (chicks at work and promotionally) and job blocked you.

exactly! its all about the resume and knowing how to BS what is on it...tailor it to the job...what a manager looks at in your case with a degree is, how long is this guy gonna stay with me after i train him and we spend money on the hiring process etc...also, if you have a degree and came off great to the people below him, there is always that aspect of whether he saw you as a threat to his position down the line also!! its tough out there right now, like i said, i even wanted to settle on some ok jobs for now and they wont hire me thinking i will be bored and when the economy moves a little i will take off to better place.(i do financial application support for banks/brokerages etc in ny and cant land even the lower end more junior positions because of what you just experienced)

you hit the nail right on the head on all points. I was going to post the exact same things.

And you would have remained unemployed. Seriously, would you have REALLY asked him that....I dont think so.

Did you ever think that these ARE the careers of some of these guys and thats why they take it so seriously?

yeah man, its a touchy issue, even after getting hired ive been "laid off" because i knew too much! ha...guess you really gotta know when to play dumb..play smart...bs etc etc!

If they had manager jobs available or supervisor jobs. Why were you not applying for those?

Many people lie on resumes ... in most states it is not illegal. If you are telling the truth take in your work history which can be verified from tax records and a professional service.

Sounds ridiculous, well you are going from a $9 an hour to maybe 50k a year. You can't be too prepared.

It doesn't matter if he scratched his balls and rolled his eyes, he has a job you don't. Go in prepared for war.

Right now im just trying to find something to make money until I can get a good paying job. I feel it would be much easier to get a regular hourly job, then try and get one of their manager jobs. I need something quick because my savings is running out, so I just applied to target. I didnt even give them a good resume, i gave them a dumbed down version of my resume i left off all management experience. However after my answers in the second interview he immiediatley wanted me to interview for the management job.

Then during the interview with the big guy I had to explain to him that I had management experience that I did not include on my resume. I told him on that resume he had I just listed basic customer service experience because that was the job I originally applied for and I could provide him with a new resume for the position they were considering me for.

I just want the fuckin 8 an hour job I originally applied for i think they would be dicks not to give it to me.

In the future when I apply for crappy jobs do you guys think I should leave out my ex science degree and teaching experience (which gives it away I have some kinda degree -any degree can be a teacher around here in certain urban schools)?????

Clearly im no freak but at 5'11" 265lbs I always look like what a typical asshole would call a "roid head" Whenever I really need something. Job interview, etc... i'll always wear whatever will make me look smallest. Im always gonna look big but you will be suprised what a huge black dress shirt and slacks can do. You can shrug your shoulders inward and not puff out your chest. Sometimes if you face has a little bloat you may even be able to pass as a fat football player lol But haters are everywhere. that is partially why aas are illegal. Look at the lawmakers? Look at their physiques. Think they want anything available for men to look better and perform better? No of course not. Everyone is a HATER!!! so you just gotta be wise with you you approach.

And the bigger/better your physique gets, the more haters you will encounter on any given day. Get used to it.

I had two jobs I applied for where I was interviewed by the manager, then halfway through the interview the manager asked me if I would consider interviewing for assistant manager, same deal..paraded me around in front of other workers, introducing me to other workers..some who had been there for 10+ years..I had a gut feeling the interviewers (managers) where not completely sincere. First job I did not get..the second job I chose another job from a parallel manager in another department.

My take is this..the first job, the manager wanted to shake the tree, scare and piss off his employees..worried they would have to adapt to a new manager and resentful he did not promote from within.

The second job has a fantastic union, vested employees do very well. However, managers and assistant managers have no protection. Most staff even though overqualified, refuse to take management positions because they lose their union protection. Since being at this second job I have seen a lot of turnover at the position I declined.

For Real!

^^^^ you said it!!!! I'd add in grocery store to the list too.
