Organ or tissue

Daily metabolic rate
Adipose (fat)
2 calories per pound

Muscle
6 calories per pound

Liver
91 calories per pound

Brain
109 calories per pound

Heart
200 calories per pound

Kidneys
200 calories per pound

Hmmm, that's pretty interesting. I would have been way off on my guesses. Where did you find that Phil?

Well, heart and kidneys makes sense. They are wiyhout a doubt the hardest working organs in our bodies. So yes they command the most energy! SO this is resting metabolic rate. I would love to know what those numbers are under the stress of training??

Great post Phil, I see the point in it.

regarding resting metabolic rate, there have been some studies saying that sitting slows it down.

**broken link removed**

there was another super complicated study that came to the amazing conclusion that fat people like to sit alot.

after reading this, i hid most of the chairs at work, and the obese dude got real angry:D

Hahaha you mean bastid. :D

"And fat is not simply a "dead" tissue. It secretes proteins such as leptin and cytokines, which can affect your metabolism [4]. According to some estimates, fat has a daily metabolic rate of two calories per pound per day"

This was taken from the article DW posted up. Very interesting. I had no idea that fat actually burned calories. I guess thats a good thing for a fatty like me. :)

Great article, and awesome info Phil :)

I might be the only one reading into this in a way which i feel is correct but.....

How many lbs is your liver, brain, kidney, or heart? Now how many lbs of muscle do us bodybuilders carry?

2lb kidney = 400 calories

150lbs of muscle = 900 calories

Did you know studies have found HGH to make organs larger???:D (Sarcasm I figure most know this.) Also studies have shown that all vital organs shrink with age "following adolescents" besides the heart and the thyroid!!

These numbers also fluctuate regarding to heart, liver, and kidney health.

TP4U I think your thinking about Lean Body Mass and not Lean Muscle Mass. LMM will subtract the organs, bones, WATER IN THE MUSCLES, etc out of the LBM. Which leaves usually leaves the average person with 10-15% (amateur BB will be a little higher like 20%) of their weight being muscle.

So your 150lbs would be around (15% of 200lb guy)30ish.

:p

The only problem is that every other type of tissue/organ burns more calories than fat, so it makes sense to have less fat and more of everything else! It's kinda like socioeconomic classes: the rich get richer...the fat get fatter!

It is said amongst the medical community that once a person reaches the age of 30, their organs/organ systems deteriorate at a rate of 1% per year.

Well....ookkk...i graduated at a fairly muscular 150lbs and now stand around 230 leaner than i was at 150. So....thats 80lbs+ muscle....maybe i wasnt carrying 70lbs of muscle before i started lifting haha

Could it be that HGH makes you leaner BECAUSE it makes the organs larger? That would explain why it takes so long to get results from it.
