I was wrongly convicted of murdering my wife and and her lover then sentenced to two life sentences in prison where I was befriended by a black man named Red who guided me through the realities of tough prison life. After 19 years I’d had enough and escaped through a long hand dug tunnel I’d carved in the wall of my cell to a long sewer line I crawled through.

Sounds like the county lock up was worse than federal. We had another member on here awhile back say just that. He felt there were more fights and the conditions were much worse in county. Can you elaborate more on that? Most of us that have never been in trouble think that federal is the worst because that is where the "hardened criminals" go. It sounds like at county there isn't as much oversight by the guards and that a lot more trouble develops.

Yeah, county jail was much worse than being in the Feds. County jail is just a warehouse for prisoners awaiting trial or sentencing. Everybody knows they are going on someplace else to do their real time, so nobody cares about anything. Boring and there's nothing to do but watch TV. We were in cells inside pods, with only one guard assigned to each pod unless something was going on. Very little oversight. No gym or weights, no library, no recreational activities, no anything to distract you. No area to have visits from friends and family, you just have to talk to them on a phone through a glass wall so they can't smuggle anything in to you. Worse food than real prison, if that's possible, and worse medical care. They don't want to do anything for you, because they know they are only holding you until you move on somewhere else.

And everybody is in county jail together, from murderers and drug dealers down to petty thieves, drunk drivers, and vagrants. Except for child molesters or child porn guys, who have to be put in protective custody or the other prisoners would kill them. But in gen pop, all kinds of different people are all mixed together. You get a much better class of prisoner on the federal level, because they had to be moving a certain weight of drugs or doing something notable for the Feds to be interested in them. Although, don't get me wrong, there are some real losers in Federal prison as well. But there are also a lot of great, fairly normal people who just made bad choices in life.

Halfway house was even worse than jail, in a way, because then you really did have everybody all in together, including the child molesters and child porn guys, and guys with mental health problems who should have been institutionalized somewhere instead of in jail in the first place. But you just have to "do you" and focus on doing your own thing, and sooner or later you have done your time and you can go home again.

Friend of mine got busted twice, first time they just slapped his wrist and gave him a year probation. Second time he did a year and a day at a Federal minimum security camp. He said it was like being on vacation with no worries or responsibilities for a year. They all had low paying jobs where they actually got paid into an account they held for you. They had a full gym with tons of free weights (only federal, it's state they took the weights away) Fucking treadmill, bikes the works. They had jogging tracks, beautiful baseball fields, basket ball courts, regulation Bocci Ball courts, Horse shoe pits, flag football teams, Ultimate frisbee teams, nice library, and tons of college and vocation courses. You could leave there with a brand new commercial drivers license, or actually get a license in electrical, plumbing, or complete many college certifications. Place had it's own electrical dept, plumbing dept, landscaping dept, metal shop, wood shop, and much more. Many people (even the inmates) thought that this was not jail!
I guess it's still loss of freedom though.
Many years ago Barbara Walters did a show on Fed minimum security camps and said it was a waste of taxpayers money. Nothing changed though.

Dang, you make it sound almost like a nice place!!LOL I never knew it was like that. All I know is what I see on the tv and movies where they always make it seem like hell on earth. I do think it is good that inmates can learn a trade and get educated there so that when they get out they can earn some income to take care of themselves.

I've spent a large majority of my life in prison because I was a dumbass in my younger years. When I first started going around 20 years ago we had it pretty good where I'm from. We had self supporting prison yards. We had slaughter houses, dairies, and gardens. Lots of job opportunities. We ate really well. Better than we deserved. We had real eggs every morning, all the milk you could drink, and even steaks off and on throughout the week for dinners along with all you could eat salad. All the yards had free weights including Max Security. Not everybody lifted but almost everyone who did got fairly big. In prison you really have no stress other than fighting. But like what was mentioned earlier, most fights or stabbings result from drug or gambling debts or gang politics. I didn't fuck around with any of that so I really never had any issues. And when all a person has to do is eat food, sleep, and lift it's the perfect environment for getting big. However shit has definitely changed. I just did my last 4 year bit a 18 months ago. Now, there are no slaughter houses, dairies, or farms. Big companies like Sisco make it more affordable for the prisons to not have any of these things. Not many jobs are offered and meals are terrible. Some institutions instead of serving milk now just give juice with vitamins supposedly in it. No eggs, no real meat, corn chips count as vegetables. Only one of the yards where I've been still has weights at all. Dudes are not near as big as they used to be 20 years ago.

The prison where I work is an intake prison. Everyone who is sentenced to prison passes through. Most are here only a few weeks to a few months. These guys dont have anything but what they are issued by the State. We have one pod that is permanent party. Those guys either have jobs or are here for medical issues. They are allowed to use the gym and have a weight room dedicated to them. They are the only ones allowed to use it. I worked in Recreation for a time. I would call them down for their rec time and turn on the radio and let them listen to any station they wanted. These are the only guys I got to know and know most of their names. I dont really care what they did to get there. I can look up each and every one of them, but choose not to. Some have gotten out and some have died there. Even though I transfered out of Rec, they still come up to me and ask me questions about Rec. I even took pictures of them for our picture program. They respect me so much that when their children visit them, they only trust me to take their pictures. Even though it isnt my job anymore, if I am not busy, I will come and take it. I am so well respected, that several have told me that if I were ever attacked by another inmate, they wouldnt hesitate to come and help me out, no matter what it costs them.

As far as steroid use, it just doesnt happen, at least at my facility. Heres why. At a bare minimum, we search every cell a minimum of once every three months. While they can get the stuff, where would they keep it where we wont find it? How many needles would they need for a cycle? Where would they put the used needles where we wouldnt find them? If we ever did suspect someone of using gear, we would NOT have them tested. Too much money for the test. We would simply tear the entire pod apart from top to bottom. We have scanners to check if they are concealing something inside of their bodies. The younger able body guys here are here on incentive. If they do anything to screw that up, they will be shipped out in a heartbeat. At a much larger facility with a large yard, I have no doubts that those guys can and do use gear. What it all boils down to is the fact that we have a job to do and it does NOT involve looking for steroids. If someone wants to use and tries hard to keep it from us, I have no reason to go after him. I have much more important things to do that need to be done before I can go home at the end of my shift. If doing a cycle of steroids discreetly keeps that guy from acting stupid and causing problems, I'm cool with that.

Steroids are very hard to come by, if you do see them it's usually orals. Even that is rare.

The weight pits themselves are actually pretty decent. Nothing too advanced but everything you need to get a good free weight workout for sure.

And I guess it depends where your at but guards don't have prisoners fight to the death or any weird shit like that. Back in the day maybe but these days in the age of cameras and such guards and other prison staff are held accountable for their actions.

Im not gonna go into all my experiences, because most everyone has covered everything here. But what you are seeing is correct also, you are just talking about different security levels. He is talking about the camp. That is where I was also. Lowest security. Shittiest food, at least for me. All the amenities mentioned though. I was at a place with a High security and the camp. The high would get pretty nasty at times. Riots, etc. Guards would pop off several rounds of rubber bullets into them from their AR's.

It is foul to put it that way, but when I was in jail(in the beginning before fed) I messed with 3 of the female guards.. got transferred for screwing one and she lost her job. Spent the next 70 days (appx) approximately, in an underground jail... no kidding. I think they actually destroyed it now, because it was deemed inhumane or something. Didnt see daylight till I was released from it. When I told some of the fed guards that, their jaws hit the floor. LOL

Going to prison as a bodybuilder would be absolutely horrible. You go in on a large stack within a matter of weeks you start to shrink down to nothing. You crash hard and lose every bit of muscle. You are then weaker then most people because you have the natural test level of a 90 year old women. Going in as an addict would be horribly miserable.

I did a bit in County when i was 19, the night i was arrested i was in intake and a lady was having a seizure, everybody was laughing at her. After seein a judge for bail the next day wveryone who was given a bond was taken to the pods, i was the only hispanic in this line being escorted up there. All the rest were african anerican. As soon as we enter there was a black guy and a hispanic guy waiting, seemed like they knew the exact races going into the pods. Hispanic dude put me on game while the blacks put their people on game. Everyone was relatively laid back. I was 19 at the time and it became like a high school reunion. Most inmates in there were in there for violent offenses, but everyone seemed to get along. The food sucked but being how little we were fed wed clear our whole tray. If you didnt have money on your books or a way to get commisarry you were badically left to eat at chow. The thing that drove me crazy was the fact that there were no clocks on the walls. Time was passing by but unable to know how much. That was a mind game for me. Bunks sucked, food sucked, everything sucked. Just would be best to stay outta jail
