Bone Spurs in Heel?

Hi,
Has anyone ever suffered from having bone spurs in their heels? I think I am going through this now. I don't know for sure because due to changing my insurance I am unable to see the doctor until the end of January.

Long story short, just out of the blue I began having intense sharp pain in my heel. It is very sharp when I stand up after sitting down a bit or first thing in the morning when I get out of bed. No exaggeration but when I wake up (even just to go pee), I limp severely to the bathroom holding onto to the wall to get there.

When I stand up it is a very sharp pain initially, but after walking a bit, the pain goes down to just a dull ache. Until I sit or lay down again (anything to take pressure off the heel).

Does this sound like something anyone may have? I figure it is a bone spur or ligament damage perhaps. But if it were ligament damage, it should be hurting the same level all the time. (I think)

Sounds like classic heel pain to me. I would treat it conservatively.

15 years ago I started having extreme sharp pain in one heel upon waking...I too thought it was a heel spur...fast forward to today...I now think it is plantar fasciitis...it always starts in the summer when I wear flip flops...no arch support and incorrect walking technique...stretch your calf/Achilles numerous times a day...after stretching check to see if the pain lessens...if it feels better it is more than likely plantar fasciitis....

I don't think it is plantar fascitiis because the pain doesn't go all the way up the foot to the arch or anywhere else. It is just that one area. You know how you have tendonitis in the elbow and the elbow hurts, but there is that one SPOT that if you touch it in the right place from the right angle, it is a like a mini bomb going off. That is sort of like what I have.

Just a simple anecdotal test...stretch the crap out of it multiple times in 1 day...after the tenth time assess if it feels better...if not it very well could be a spur...mine started one summer about 15 years ago...upon waking my first few steps felt like I was stepping on a nail...as soon as summer ended and I started wearing normal shoes again the pain went away...

..upon waking my first few steps felt like I was stepping on a nail...

EXACTLY!!!

But this has been going on for about 5 months now. I don't think my shoes are the problem because I have been wearing these all year and nothing at the start of the year indicated any pain.

I will do the stretching and report back. Thank you for replying.

My bone spur went away with changing footwear. Although I only had it for a few months

The pain went away after a few weeks didn't change much still squatted deadlifted just stopped one day

There is no way to tell if you have a bone spur unless you get an x-ray. If you have pain, then there is inflammation of some sort some how.

Bone spurs are created from consistent impact or tension. This can be created from tight calf muscles or poor cushioning in your shoes.

Plantar fasciitis is similar where the fascia is on tension creating inflammation of the soft connective tissue.

Like others said, try stretching your calf on a consistent basis. Ice the area frequently. Try getting a soft pair of sneakers. If you still have pain after 2-3 weeks of stretching and icing with new shoes then go to see a foot specialist.

Also you can take ibuprofen to decrease the inflammation.

Wish I were that lucky. But after this long I don't think it will happen.

I am doing the stretch test as mentioned above. I have done 3 stretch sessions lasting about 5 minutes each time today so far. Standing with my heels hanging off a book/block for a few minutes and then "walking" each heel down further from side to side another few minutes. Will do another session before bed.
Will report back tomorrow and over the next few days to see if it helps.

I am interested in knowing if your heel pain has improved since stretching began 5 days ago?........kvh

I hope he did.

Its insaine how much stretching can heal, and play a part in your
body. Its not even funny.

Had nervdamage ALL over my body. From feets/knees/hip/back/neck
EVERYTHING. Tought all my joints were bone on bone.

Took me 5 years to figure this out, just before i was redy to end it all.
Now im stretching 2 hours per day, smoking cannabis before (cant even
get close to the healing of stretching without cannabis). Before im allways
waking up stiff, even if i stretched all night. Now, adding cannabis. I wake
up and feel better n better each day.

Dont even like cannabis, gives me panic anxiety. But the plant can heal..

OMG are you serious? A year?

Would you have it done again? Does what I describe sound like what you experienced?

It (usually) takes a long time to heal after surgery because they cut it from the bone and anything being done to the bone takes a long time to heal. I think what you described sounds like a spur; to me it felt like I had a sharp rock in my shoe all the time and it kept getting worse, would do it again.

Ok, I have been doing 4-5 stretching sessions per day now since I last posted (the day I started). I can officially say that it hasn't done anything. :(

When I stretch, I feel nothing in "that spot" on the bottom of my heel. No extra pain, no little tug at the area, etc.. Then again, when I do calf raises, I don't feel anything there either.

But as soon as I walk, that little dime size area.... STAB STAB STAB....

I made an appointment with my regular doc Jan 7. So he can refer me to whatever foot doctor or foot specialist he thinks is best. I hope I can get in this month.

On a side note, I have also gone 3 times to the little chinese guys at the mall who do the chair massage had them do a foot massage. When they massage it, it is very tender and a bit painful, and while it feels great while it is happening, afterwards there is no change overall.

Continue what you are doing. Good for you for doing the hard work. It may still get better from the stretching alone. The docs I work for send people to physical therapy with a six week follow up, meaning that it may take weeks for the benefits to add up. However, the benefits tend to be lasting if you are able to alleviate the cause of the situation. Keep us informed how things go.

Bumping this thread so I can post an update for anyone interested.

Went to the foot specialist and had xrays. It is a bone spur. He gave me a cortisone shot and inserts to wear. He said that the bone spur itself did not appear to warrant surgery and they wanted to try this method first to see if it helped.

He did tell me that the two worst things for feet were wearing flip flops or bed room shoes. (which I do neither)

Will the bone spur go away on its own without surgery? So inserts and cortisone shots for life?
Take care.
