Hernia question

Is surgery required for every hernia. I have one that I can pop in when it pops. Not huge but I don't see any improvement in it. It doesn't hurt but I lift for strength so I worry it will become much worse. It happens to sit right under my lifting belt on the top edge of my belly button.

What is your experience with this situation?

The sooner you get it fixed the smaller the cut will be. I had two done and they made a big cut to fix the bad one. The one by the belly button wasn't bad (2 1/2" cut).

You need to get that fixed. BEFORE your innards pop through the hole, make it bigger, get twisted, blocked, etc.

I had prostate surgery a few years back that I kept putting off. My urologist finally made me see the light. He said, "Do you want to have the surgery in some run down hospital in the middle of nowhere while you're on vacation or do you want it on your terms?" I had the surgery two weeks later.

FYI I also had hernia surgery 30 years ago at 23 years old. I was born with it, it was small and didn't bother me. Then one day it was huge and hurt like hell.

To confirm what these guys are telling you, yes, get them fixed before they get worse. I've had 2 hernia repairs in my life.

I had a minor umbilical hernia (belly button area) a few years ago. I felt the knife-like sensation going for "just one more" on ab wheel rollouts. I had also previously never really used belts...but at that point it became necessary. I didn't have insurance and couldn't pony up for it, so I just was careful and didn't strain it.

Flash forward a few years...I go in to Dr. to get hernia checked out in the normal location, and doc says I'm good to go. I just bring up that I had one before and ask him his thoughts--that I hadn't seen it in awhile or anything. He probed it and said it appears to have scarred over and should be fine now.

Anyways, I'd still go get it fixed if I were you (and could afford it). Better safe than sorry, and peace of mind is worth a lot.
