2019 Arnold Australia - Problems with IFBB judging (height, aesthetics, etc.)

For a couple of decades now the IFBB has placed primary importance on the amount of conditioned muscle per square inch of frame that a competitor presents for judging. This has allowed short guys with terrible aesthetics but who have extreme muscle thickness and great conditioning to place above tall guys with great physiques who might not be as filled out or as conditioned.

Now, all things being equal, of course more muscle and better conditioning should always beat less muscle and worse conditioning. But factors like aesthetics cannot be dismissed. Fortunately, the judges at this past year’s Olympia seemed to have realized this by giving Rhoden the win over Heath. However, we still need some more course correction in this matter. Exhibit A would be the Australian Arnold Classic, in which William Bonac got the win over Cedric McMillan.

Now, if you watch the videos of the contest, it will be apparent that Bonac has more muscle per square inch of frame, and is in better condition. However, McMillan is almost an entire foot taller than Bonac, and has a much more aesthetically pleasing look to his physique. No man in his right mind is going to look at the two guys on stage and think to himself he would rather have Bonac’s body. And remember, this “sport” is called Bodybuilding. The contest is about who has built the best body.

This brings me to my point. The judges have done well by giving Rhoden the Olympia, placing a greater emphasis on aesthetics, a tight midsection, and the desired X-shape. However, the judges need to take a step further, by not only placing a greater emphasis on those factors, but also by considering height as well. A short Mr. Olympia just simply isn’t good for the sport, and I write this as a fully grown adult male who stands at 5’10”.

Going back to this years Australian Arnold, Bonac looked great, but for all his back thickness he didn’t have width in the front double bicep to really create a dramatic X-frame. For all his conditioning, he is still narrow across the clavicles in the side chest pose. For all his muscle, he still has a relatively short torso that makes his body look a bit dwarfish. Yet, McMillan, though not quite as conditioned and tight as Bonac, looked like a supreme alpha male on stage. His body is tall, thick, aesthetic, etc. That is the kind of body we want to build. That is bodybuilding.

This is of course your opinion. And my opinion is Bonac was the rightful winner.

Seems the judges feel the same...

Ummm anyone see second call outs........... WTF was that? Maybe I watch the wrong call outs

Aesthetically pleasing is not in the real judging standards as I remember. It is a matter of personnel preference. I myself prefer powerful looking over pretty. Each to their own. In the end though great short guys often get passed over to the taller guy.

A short Mr. Olympia isn't good for the sport? LOL..Tell that to Dexter Jackson who stands at 5'5"-5'6"..

My problem with Bonac is not that he is a short man, its his structure and proportions, sucks, his FDB is horrible.

Bonac has a short torso which makes him look a little blockier, that said though I'm still a big fan of his physique. I like Cedric's too for that matter. I can appreciate both for what they bring to the stage.

Height though has never been part of the judging criteria for the sport and it shouldn't be. If a taller competitor brings a package of balance, symmetry, muscularity and conditioning to the stage that beats a shorter competitor, then thats a deserved victory. But getting bonus points just for being tall is ridiculous.

I say this as a 5'6", middleweight competitor. I've taken down plenty of heavier and taller guys than me. And the only argument they had was they were taller. Not better conditioned, not more symmetrical, not more muscular. Just taller. It's a weird sentiment, at least to me, that height is something to just be rewarded on it's own. Taller doesn't equal better. Better equals better. If that person just so happens to be taller, then fine.

lol.. the judges obviously see something that you don't, otherwise he wouldn't be placing in the top 5 and winning shows.

If you want, post up your FDB and we can all compare to see whose is better..:D

I was sitting in the audience during prejudging and finals and in my opinion Bonac was a clear winner. I personally like Cedric’s physique better but Bonac won fair and square.
Reilly in 3rd was a gift, his condition was way off.

From an aesthetic and desirability point, Cedric has the better physique.

From a judged, bodybuilding point, Bonac was better. His legs emphasised that weakness on Cedric, which made him (Bonac) the clear winner.

Bonac might just be the least aesthetically pleasing physique to ever place top 5 in an olympia. I mean god bless him for working with what he's got; he comes in on point every time and I actually agree he was the rightful winner, but he looks like a black dwarf from Lord of the Rings and has the most cringey posing/ rnb dance moves to ever grace a bodybuilding stage. He's particularly un-charismatic and inarticulate to boot ughhh I would love him to go away.
