I have been through 5 different routers in the month. I have to say, the best, overall, installation an user friendly, LINKSY is the best. So if your having router issues i have to reccomend linksys.
I like Linksys and for years would run a WRT-54GL. I am finding that as of late, while they're base code is OK, it's nothing special compared to the rest. You want a router that can be refirmwared with DD-WRT, from **broken link removed**. The model listed above, while older, works perfect with DD-WRT, and has for years. Some of the newer ones make you jump through hoops like running VXWorks killer, etc instead of just allowing you to refirmware. I have also seen some incompatibility with certain NICs when it comes to plugging in one of the LAN ports where it fails to set the correct duplex or speed. This was a problem with Cisco switches a long time ago and am guessing that since the merger of Linksys/Cisco this may be related to the same problem we had years ago with Catalyst. As of late, I recommend newer Buffalo, hands down as they seem to run forever like Linksys, but come with more options AND they use DD-WRT as their base firmware. Awesome if you ask me.
I've had great luck with Netgear (plus they now offer a lifetime warranty to boot). I use their WNDR3400 at home and at work, and several of my friends has them, too.
As for Linksys, I've had 3 different ones over the last several years, and they always failed within the first year. Plus, Linksys sucks for guest access, and the restrictions they place on that option.
Stability and function. DD-WRT makes a normal router perform like an $5K from Cisco. You dont need to re-firmware now if you buy a Buffalo. The new ones come with DD-WRT installed. This is the one I'd recommend:
