I just sort of stumbled upon a way to add some flavor to my rice without much trouble. I use a little 12 dollar rice cooker from wal mart, so I put in about 1/2 tbsp of olive oil in the bottom, added in some garlic and onion powder, and some ginger and started it up. Once the oil was sizzling a little I added a cup of uncooked jasmine rice in and stirred it in the oil. Then I added in a cup and a half of chicken broth and about 2 cups of chopped broccoli, and about a tbsp of soy sauce. Put the lid on and let 'er cook. Turned out really well and didn't add extra dishes or many extra calories.

Another always wash the rice before you cook it :) because its dirty...the chinese do it!

Sounds delicious but how is the sodium? Chicken Browth and Soy Sauce would make it high, no?

I would have never thought to put oil in a rice cooker. But I have all those ingredients, and the same old boring brown rice is getting old. Looks like I have something new to try, thanks bro!

wash and rinse

I always soak for 5 minutes, then "wash" by swirling the rice around in the water and pouring it off, then repeat until the water is no longer cloudy. This removes the dust and grit and some starch too!
Seems to turn out better and is more fluffy and has less of a sticky, clumpy quality to it.
Love some Basmati rice cooked the way you describe...

In addition to cleaning the rice it also removes some of the starch which will help the rice not stick together.

I just used your suggestions to spice up my brown/wild rice side dish. It made it much better than just plain out of the steamer. Thanks!

I saw a vid with Jason Huh the other day and he says he leaves the rice in the cooker for up to 3 days. Does anyone else do this? I would think it being warm and wet for 3 days would be a breeding ground for bacteria?

May have to purchase a rice cooker and try that out.. I usually boil mine and its soo damn bland!

Anyone use a slow cooker for rice? I use it for Beef and sweet potatoes.. never heard of anyone using it for rice
