Bill Starr's 5x5
http://www.geocities.com/elitemadcow...Linear_5x5.htm
I hope this isnt the wrong place to post this. Here is the link to the Mad Cow Intermediate Version. I've been checking it out for a couple weeks and think i will change my routine to it. What are your guys thoughts on it? I've also read that this is great to achieve significant gains with a cycle since the routine is based upon gradual increases in weight weekly. If anyone has used this before, how light do you actually start out with, on a scale of 1 - 10 what would be the effort exerted. i would hate to start to heavy and peak out to early and have to start over. |

I didn't really want to post anything on this board but I am a great Bill Starr fan. I used his system from 99 to 2003, and that was the best strength training program i ever used. But i wished i knew what you were referring too. The one i followed was the light medium and heavy system. I used specifically to bring up my squats and legg size. It worked amazingly for me, I got to admit tho for me personally it brought me great strength increases but not much in the way of muscle size.. maybe just muscle density. When I started the program i could only squat about 400 , deadlift 400, bench under 300, and by 2003 my squat increased close to 600, deadlift 550 , and my bench went up to 385. All of them by 5 reps. I would highly suggest you read his book and the decide which program you want to follow, but if your serious about gaining over all strength and best conditioning that would be what I would recommend. Good Luck !..

Bill Starr for me is one of the un sung hero's of the life! He was a head of his time and a master in his own right some what in the same way as Vince Gironda for bodyguilding Bill was for strength and conditioning.
I first read 'the strongest shall survive' in 1979/1980 this book helped me build a solid strength foundation which allowed me excel in a team strength sport. At time when coaches thought running in a plastic sack and sit ups were the extreme of conditioning. It stood me good stead for martial art combat and bodybuilding later on. Whilst 5x5 is a fantastic system that has been adapted by many industry luminaries they merely stand on the shoulders of this gaint and his work. 5x5 will make you powerful and strong great assests for bodybuilding, it is not really for hypertrophy more functional hypertrophy to coin a phrase of a leading light of today who surely read this book. My tribute to this great book and author and my thanks to Bill Starr, I still reference this book today. |
