New to this site. Been reading a lot and haven't posted much. I am 40, 5'7", 190lbs (lean). I love training especially hard and heavy but lately I noticed a little longer recovery time and have had some injuries. My diet and supplement schedule seems to be in check. Any suggestions for recovery or training schedule for my age? I don't think I'm too old yet.

40 is not old!! ;) I would say, listen to your body. If you feel you need more time to recover, take it. Injuries can be a signal to back off a little too. As I have aged, I have put less emphasis on just the "hard and heavy" and have been more focused on muscle intensity… but using lighter weight. My joints and tendons like this approach better. Everyone's body slowly changes as we age so I think knowing yourself is key. Be intuitive.

Thanks Brick,

I have also found that using lighter weight is easier on the joints but mentally I feel like I'm not accomplishing much. I have cut back training to only three days a week, due to the slower recovery. Thanks for the info!

I'm with you on that mental thing. After years of constantly going for the ever bigger weight, I had to make a major readjustment to my mindset. But I told myself, if I keep doing what I am doing, I will eventually be out of the game altogether, because I was slowly destroying my joints through the years with excessive weight. These days, I dropped the weight and really squeeze the muscle at peak contraction. I get sore as hell and guess what? I didn't shrink away! So it really is opening yourself to new ideas in training. Especially if you want to train for the long haul and adapt as you body changes through the years.

if you are prone to inuries which is what it kinda sounds like try warming up on some cardio before lifting (5-10mins) and do at least 2 warm up sets per excercise you are doing i am pretty prone to inuries myself and this has helped me alot especially if i am going to be lifting heavy that day. also if something starts to hurt dont keep pushing it just back off a little. thats how i broke my elbow and tore my rotator cuff both injuries coulda been prevented if i would have just listened to my body. but live n learn i guess

Welcome to the family bro.

Thanks bros

I going to try some new training techniques and see what works. I want to train for the long haul so I quess I'm going to have to adapt. Still hoping to grow some more.

Tore my right rotator cuff four years ago and still feel a little discomfort, especially when driving??? Could have prevented my injury but was a little too aggressive (and hardheaded) at that time.

Thanks for the welcome nartic.

Im 40 and started DC Training. One thing that DC wrote was about bb'ers over the age of 34 and it makes sence. You can still grow but we have to remember we are not 20 and 21 anymore. Lower your weight, give it all you got and like brick said you will get sore and can still grow. Also keep in mind the mind muscle connection.
