safely transferring the contents of an amp to a vial?

Hi

I've got an injectable supplement from a recognized pharmaceutical company that comes in sealed 5ml glass amps. The problem is that I only need to do 1ml every 4 days, so heres the steps, please correct if wrong:

1. break open glass amp
2. stick needle in with big enough syringe to suck up 5ml and suck up liquid
3. vent new sterile vial with same size needle
4. stick original needle with liquid in it and push liquid into new vial


do i need to change the needle from when i draw out of the amp to when i inject into sterile vial? thx

I am also diabetic, but you shouldn't need to switch out the needles. I would make sure though that you wipe the top of vial with an alcohol pad to make sure that it is sterile.

At my work we sometimes give Fentanyl for pain and it comes in a glass amp.
The concern is when you break off the top, micro pieces of glass can fall into the drug, which leads to the concern of glass floating around the body.

So- besides wrapping an alcohol wipe the top when you break it off you then need to use what's called a "filter needle". It's simply what the name implies, it will filter any solutes/glass as you draw up the medication without affecting the medication itself.

If I needed to do this, I might follow a similar structure, but that's just me...
1) Break off top with alcohol wipe wrapped around
2) Draw up medication with filter needle attached to large enough syringe
3) REMOVE filter needle and attach REGULAR needle to inject into vial

Yes, but...

They are bit expensive. Those are syringe filters. (which work the same way) but look for "filter needle", I believe you'll find a better price. Plus, I could be wrong, but just by looking at the whatman, I'm concerned if there would be any loss of medication in the filter, the thing is huge!

Get some filter, sterile oil and run it through at the end to push the remaining oil you want to keep out. Still going to lose a bit, but you can minimize this.

I believe, don't quote me on this, you lose about 1mL to the filter itself. So even if you can retrieve half that using plain oil, that'd be great.

Yeah, that's why I suggest the filter needle, just being anal and wanting to maximize whatever medication amount there is

i was looking into a few sites that have filter needles and all of them required a prescription to buy. are filter needles controlled? im suprised our needle sponsor doesnt sell them.

I've never had a need for them, but I am quite confident I found a couple sights not too far back that offered them w/o 'script. Sorry I can't think of the sights, dig a little more.
