Dose anyone know of the problems of importeing gym equiment from the US to the UK. Customs, VAT, shipping ect or has anyone brought equiment across to the UK form the US with success. What are the pitfalls and benifits.

I am based in the UK, there should be no problem, it just takes a while, You must use SHipping by sea takes around 30 days (air freight would be astronomical on a heavy order), the best way to do it would to use a good freight forward company, depending on just how much you are importing. There are many companies who specialise in this, my father has a shipping company opporating next to his business, I could ask them for you if you like to get some advice. I know they ship antiques to the USA, in large shipping containers. It all depends just how much you are shipping over, however most large US gym equipment manufacture businesses now have a distributor here in the UK, all be them a little expensive with the strength of the £ v $

Yes I am setting up a new gym and was thinking of taking advantage of the attractive UDS-GBP exchange rate. Any help on this project would be of great assistance. I have a budget of £30000 = $60000 to spend on free weights and resistance equiment. So I am looking to buy a complete gym. No carido equiment as I can pick it up pretty cheap at auction over here. Can you have a chat with your friend about shipping charges for me and if there would be import duty to be paid on gym equiment.

No worries, I will give him a call for you see if I can find anything out, there are some pretty good deals knocking around as Gyms are constantly selling or refurbing equipment, Do you have a brand of equipment in mind, A friend of mine has recently used CYbex UK, and they got really hot deals, maybe worth giving them a call.

Ok mate spoke to them for you this morning, It is all pretty simple really, If your goods would come in it's own 20 foot container, you can get them here as quick as 7 days, as time on the water is less that that, if you would be sharing a container space it can take as long as 30 days for full clearance, many companies can take care of the trucking of the container from manufacture to port and port to your delivery address, but a good freight forward company should take care of all of this for you, as a guide a 20 foot container on it's own would be a around 2 grand, + import vat and duties, ( a 40 fter is more) which can only really be calculated once a details invoice of the goods has been calculated. If you are a new business it would be worthwhile registering for VAT before import as you would be able to claim back all the VAT in your setup costs which should assist in cash flow, it is appearent quite hard to reclaim VAT for import goods once the business is set up and establised, it is also possible to defer payment of VAT costs too, but I do not know enough about that kinda thing, I hope this helps you out, If I can help you anymore, let me know, The guy at the shipping company would gladly give you a quote once you are clearer what you want, but he did say that it would be easier to use a local freight forward company to you and get them to work wil your need specifically, they are based in sheffield UK, I hope all goes well for you.
