Anyone US people that own gold. Advice, info sources, etc?

A friend of mine has convinced me to close my bank accounts and buy gold coins and bullion. I'm have been losing money and I'm sick of it.
Problem is I'm a computer nerd and that knows little to nothing about gold, marketing, economy, etc...
So are there are gold owners that have advice on the topic?
I'm not all that concerned with making profit. I just want to keep savings value that I can cash into other national/international currencies.

I'm against buying into something you know nothing about.

Not sure where you are loosing money...but there are a few Fixed debt instrument other than just your CD's.

Precious Metals have done pretty good lately.......why not check the performance of a mutual fund that invest in precious metals. Check Vanguand and T Rowe Price Mutual Fund families...for Fixed and Precious Metals. Also check Emerging Markets or Total Stock Funds too.

I don't want to get into stocks, mutuals, markets, etc...
I just want to tangibly own gold (preferably bullion) that I can cash inside and out of the US, and not get scammed or my pants pulled down over the price.

Gold is trading really high right now , I think around $820 oz. It is the highest since the early 1980's. Right now many investors are saying it will probably come in near $1000. The problem with you buying it in US Dollars and then at some point exchanging it overseas is that our dollar is very weak right now. I would not put all of your money into anyone thing, banks have very secure places to put your money into i.e. cd's, saving bonds, money market accounts.
