A lawyer told me once to start by writing the details of your idea down before you talk to any body about it. Then put it in a envelope and seal it. Put your address on it and mail it to yourself. DON'T OPEN IT when you get it. The envelope will be dated. Keep this in a safe place for your records. This keeps it documented as to when you came up with the idea. If you ever have to go to court over it, the judge can open the seal envelope and your idea will be detailed and dated.
You will copyright the idea and patient the invention or process. For more information on copyright go to their web site... and for the patient go to copyright.gov and www.uspto.gov
