I have a product coming to market and was wondering if any of you know anything about upc bar codes. I was searching the internet and one site I came across said they were the only people who make upc bar codes, that are accepted by retailers everywhere. Another site said you have to contact the uniform code council and they will give you the info to create the bar code.

Anyone have any info on this???

You will need barcodes to sell your products through almost all retail stores now days. You have to watch out for companies who will scam you on UPC. The only way to get a barcode number is by registering your company with the GS1. **broken link removed**

The GS1 was formerly the Uniform Code Council, Inc. They regulate the UPC and other bar code standards. First you have to register your company with GS1. Then they assign your company a number. Once you have your company number, you can start publishing barcode on your product labels. It will be up to you to assign individual barcodes for your products.

There is varies software available that generates barcode numbers and barcode labels. Most printers have software to generate numbers for their customers, so consult with your local printers before you buy a software.

Thanks Sassy....I will have to look into registering with GS1. That way I don't get scammed.
