Well guys I finally landed another job..a little less pay but weekends off and no more PRN status. ALOT more stress free!!!

My question is tomorrow I have to tell my boss about the new job offer and put in the 2 weeks notice and all that stuff...NEVER had to do this with a job.

SO

I was thinking of telling him that I got another offer and this is what they are offering me (then give him a list of things) and tell him I thought I should give them the option of trying to beat or even maybe just match these and I would stay.

Number one thing here is I DONT wanna burn any bridges leaving since I will probably need some references and letters of recommendation from them.

How do I handle this?

Thank you sooo much
RONJON

leaving your job

I would say if you want to stay at your current job, but are looking for more $$ or better working conditions then tell your boss, give him an opportunity to beat your other offer.

If you have no intention of staying at your current job, even if he matches or beats the offer you have, I would say don't give him the impression you do, as a former employer nothing more frustrating then go through the process of getting everything done to match the offer then have the employee leave anyway.

Best policy is be honest why your leaving, nothing tops honesty.

My 2 cents

Just tell him that an opportunity came up that was a much better fit for you, and you needed to take it.

Also thank him for employing you for the time that he did.

Be humble and mature.

RJ, don't beat around the bush with him, be upfront and tell him you landed a better job...as Shelby said thank him for the opportunity that you had to work with him. If he is a true boss/friend he will totally understand. Good luck.

Don't ever try to negotiate better terms with your current employer when you have a better job offer in hand....it rarely works in your favor in the long term....you will be viewed as the guy who isn't committed to the organization....

Just thank your current employer for the opportunity there and give your notice.

Thanks for the advice guys...typing a respectable resignation letter right now.

RonJon, I believe in what Physics has said. It just comes across as almost a form of "blackmail". He may bring it up to you however. Even then I feel there is a lingering resentment, and when the tide turns, and it always does, it could come back on you. I don't feel the same if you leave and then get hired back at a better position/paygrade etc.
Good Luck, show class, be thankful and kind.

offer to do whatever you can to make the transition easier - and follow through with that.

that always helps.

agree on the negotiating, sometimes it works but expecting to be given more for the same work is not going to happen from your current company. They may match or give you more to stay, but they will expect way more in return. If you are already set to leave, don't bs with the dude, tell him you were approached and have accepted another position elsewhere and would like to give him your 2 week notice, and what your last day with the company will be. I wouldn't hurt to ask if there is anything you can do to make the transition more helpful since your tasks will go to someone else.

Congratulations on your new job. Leave on a high note and with class. No bridges are ever burned doing that.

Well Ive made the final decision and I started my new job today...tomorrow I work the weekend and will break the news to my "old boss". I told him i would stay and work the weekends for this month to help them out. Hopefully he doesnt have a power trip and act like an ass when I tell him because yea id rather leave on a high note then quit.

BTW cant wait to work only for this new job and get my weekends back and some free time. Thank you guys for the support during my whole looking for a job/getting a job period. I really appreciate it guys

RJ

You said the new job was alot more stress free and you would be off on weekends? And it's more money? Sounds like a win/win to me. Usually when you try negotiating pay at your current job the employer tries making you feel like your not doing enough, or he'll give you more pay but throw more work on your back. 90% of what you'll make at most jobs I believe your going to make as you walk through the door. In this day and time, advancement chances are few and far between with companies. They'd just assume throw you out and hire a green pea who will do the same thing for less $$

You already started your new job, and haven't even given notice yet at your current job??

Well I told my boss that I was gunna head to the new job and "check things out" friday which i did...and ended up accepting and signing the papers and everything. But thursday my boss was trying to negotiate and asking what can we do to make you stay. Basically I just want outta there tho ya know. My boss is an egomaniac and I hate discussing shit with him but we will see what happens when I tell him Im taking their offer
