Any way to get by web blocker at work?

I'd like to be able to access some sites from my work PC (no porn, nothing illegal) but the web-blocker on our system won't let me gain access.

Is there any way to get by that damn thing?

It depends on what type of 'web blocker' your IT runs.

if its possible, you can setup a proxy from home (squid on linux, kind of a pita)

or you can rent a proxy

bascially a proxy 'tunnels' your traffic thru a common open port (like 80- used for web pages)

it almost sounds like your IT is running a sonicwall (or equiv)which is an IP filter, thus a proxy should work (unless they ALLOW only certain sites and deny the rest)

Yea, I can go to some sites, such as this one, but I can't go to web-hosting services (like youtube or photobucket) or personal network/storage type sites (like yahoo geocities, for example).

really hard to say what type of blocker it is.. I just don't have much experience in them.


if you have some cash.. you could try renting a proxy, that would be a minimal investment to 'see' if it works.

Before you rent a proxy like Anointeds, make sure that you can get to their proxy first. Router rules now include a vast majority of the proxies out there which obviously means if you cannot get to the proxy, you cant use it.
