how to reduce background in WAV audio files or mp3 files

I record my lectures, at school. They get recorded in WAV format but they have a lot of background. I can hear a lot of "shhhhhhhhhhhhh" . Is there a program taht can remove the background and amplify the teachers voice.

I tried converting the WAV to mp3 hoping hte voice would get a little clearer but not much difference.

Wav is simply a lossless codec, which means it is not compressed. All the mp3 is going to due is compress it so you will still hear the backround just at a lesser quality. First off I need to know what type of computer you have. Mac or PC? If you have a PC you can download a torrent for a program called "Wavelab". The program is a Wave editor. You can apply an effect called a "DeEsser" which will filter that excess backround noise. Now Wavelab is professional studio software, you do not have to get a program that advanced but it is so flexible that is why I recommend it! I produce electronic music, I was a resident DJ back in Michigan. I moved and opened my own business an have not had time for music unfortunately. Just work and training!

Try this software "Goldwave" you have so much control over audio. I have used it to remix music.
