Before you but a Vista machine, you better check and see what Microsoft is doing with it first.

It may very well go by the wayside. There's a lot of rumors going around.

It may be another ME.

This all may be a rumor. If anyone can update this with something, please do.

[edit]The talk is that the new operating system will be Windows 7 or Windows XP 2007

Microsoft extended the support for XP until 2008 so M$ can complete in the entery level computer market (i believe) BUT Vista will most likely be a reality as XP replacement very soon. I also believe that Dell is under contract to stop selling XP machine options (soon) to all non corp accounts.

Vista is actually not that bad anymore, its been mostly rewritten from the ground up after 6ish years of development. unlike ME which had less than 1.5 years of dev.

Vista will be here to stay for a while im afraid. For a new machine.. just get lots of RAM and you will be fine.

or.. install ubuntu if you don't game.. *shrug*

Umm... Nope.

I know the NT versions since NT 4.0. This is something totally different.

LOL... you seem like a smart cat. He probably is too. I wasn't trying to start anything, just read one article on Cnet and then started googling and the more I read, the more I thought, what the hell?!?

Vista won't even be usable until 2009 (at least until they have a few service packs out which I doubt will happen in such a short time) and they already are kicking it aside in favor of the 'next' great OS...

I sort of feel that M$ has a limited amount of screw ups before people just start looking for other solutions. One of the articles I read was that M4 should make Vista open source. That would help. Also get rid of the rediculous licensing. Just because Mac has their hardware and OS married together, M$ is trying to do the same thing but it won't work because anyone can build a machine (even me) and should be free to move their OS to any machine they like since they own the software. That's one of the things that gave them an edge on Apple in the first place: universality or maybe versatility.

And what's with all the versions??? It takes a PhD in computer science just to figure out which one is best for you.

Lots of blunders coming out of Redmond these days IMHO.

You can port Direct X 10 to XP so I won't even think of looking at Vista for Windows any time soon.

when is everyone gunna realize that apple is the way to go. I used to be a microsoft user but im the ahappiest ever with a mac now.

Quick reply via Windows Mobile, they are not dropping it, they are just taking in what outside corporations have for input. The change is coming around as they know they didn't hit the nail on the head. With SP1 no major changes come also and no slipstream support comes either as it was made to just fix holes and majpr problems, but not to change the functionality. With SP2 you will see major changes Just wait until the second pack is out.

I personally, and OTH can vouch, HATED Vista, but now it has proven at least stable to me. With advancments of DX10, it is undeniably the best OS out there for games especially things like Crysis. Point is, everyone hates the new stuff as I always do, but hang in there, learn it, and get used to it because it is coming one way or another.

On a side note DoD is puching for this to be the OS of their future as it is so over fucking secure, it is almost re-god-damn-diculous.

and OMB listens to NIST who listen to DoD and implement stupid fucking policies with zero R/D and expect us to beta test their own mandate. Its so retarded.

Literally we sit in conferences with the project lead and lecture HIM on bugfixes for THEIR OWN POLICY..

/rant sorry, been dealing with this shit at work for months now

Just a note... I'm not making a prediction here... Just passing on info.

I have no idea what those people will do!

You can still get XP by asking

Vista was pushed out by the business divisions before it was ready to ship. You have to look at Microsoft as a business and they need to make a profit in a certain time frame to justify business. The lack of drivers was an issue that hs gotten better and other things. SP2 will help out a lot and really make this a transitional system to the next version that is due out in about a year and 3/4s. There were other considerations like how this will spur sales for the hardware partners.
Thus is you can hang on with XP you will be supported and can chose the following version you want to go to. just add some RAM and faster hard discs and you should be good to go.

Good post but this made me laugh... kinda like... "What are we supposed to look at them as?" Seriously though, I am going to do what you said. I'm waiting for SP2 and then see what the reviews of that are. XP does everything I want it to and it has plenty of add-ons that can make it Vista-like.

Wouldn't hurt my feelings. I bought a machine with vista last year, and then shortly after re-formatted and installed XP pro. runs slower, and is always playing big brother on you.

Windows NT 7 = XP
Windows NT 8 = Vista

If you want to be technical,

There was NT4, then Windows 2000 (aka NT5), Then Windows XP (aka NT5.1), Then Window Vista (aka NT6)

That is why the new Windows Operating System is currently named Windows 7...

Also a word of note, XP64 is NT5.2 because it's core is Server 2003.

Sticking with Xp

I'm sticking with XP barebones until MS gets its act together. Can play Crysis flawlessly and that's all I need. Can't wait for the next Crysis to come out. Prophet is one bad mamajama.

Anyway, I agree with OuchThatHurts just make an OS and let your "fans" get the thing to work. That was the problem with ME, they wanted to add all these enhancements for the less initiated but truth of the matter is it bloats the thing too much and causes problems. Looks like they tried to do the same thing with Vista.

I work for dell and all of there systems are now vista no more xp its end of life. vista is here to stay.

So was ME. I predict Vista will go into the crapper.
