If Apple's instrcutions above do not work:
Create an system Environment Variable
DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES
Give it a value of 1
Reboot, then go into Device Manager. Disconnect your iPod. From View at the top and select "Show Hidden devices. You may then see items with a caution mark next to them that were mounted at one time but invalid drivers were implemented. Delete those entries. Next scroll to the bottom and expand the USB tree. Delete items that are greyed out showing as inactive. Some of these will appear to be your iPod USB connection, delete those as well. Then look in your devcie tree up towards the top and delete any Apple devices.
Reboot, then connect back up your iPod. It should find all new hardware and reallocate proper IRQs to the USB stack. Once the drivers are mounted you should be set. Go back into Device Manager with the iPod connected. Select Show hidden devices again and confirm that all hardware mounted correctly with no caution marks.
