Ok, dumb question, but I needed some help. My iBook is getting on up there in computer years and apparently some of the newer software will only run on the latest and greatest Mac OS system. I'm not sure which one it is because I haven't kept up with the updates.

Here is the problem: I bought a new iPod Nano and it won't work with my current iTunes. The message said I needed to update iTunes. Download the new iTunes and I get another error message saying I need to update OS.

Now if I updated my OS will this wipe out what's on my hard drive. I'm guessing I need to backup everything before I start the upgrade?

My other Q is will my older programs operate with the new OS? I can't afford to buy all new upgrades on my programs right now. I'm not even sure I have the money for the upgraded OS.

i don't have a mac but if its anything like a pc installing a new os will wipe everything... some programs may work, some won't. i just bought a laptop last week. my desktop was running xp and the labtop is vista. luckily all my programs were compatible with vista.

UGA! That's what I'm afraid of... I don't think I'll chance it for now.

Thanks for you help

Sassy,

What Mac OS version are you running on your iBook? If you are running version 10.X ... I doubt you would have any problems running your old apps.

If you have an OLD iBook, I would pick up a copy of 10.4 on EBay. If you have a newer iBook (less than 3 yrs old), you should shoot for OS 10.5.

The BEST way to do a system upgrade is a FRESH install. This would require you to backup all your files on to a CD/DVD/External hard drive prior to starting the process.

Here is a link to the Apple OS Manuals (Install Guides):

10.5 - http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/Welcome_to_Leopard.pdf
10.4 - **broken link removed**

If you ever have any Mac questions....feel free to PM me!

I think updating the OS won't wipe your data. If you are into reinstalling your os that wipes off your data.
Find update package for your current os to new one and update it. I think it should not create any problems like data loss but yea new os may need new hardware though.

Thanks

COMPUTERS ARE A PAIN IN THE A$$!!

Well Crap!! Looks like I'm going to have to upgrade. I was going to try to get by without it for a little while longer, because Everlast's hard drive bit the dust several weeks ago. He's got to buy a new laptop. Because we are little low on funds, I was going to wait until he's business picked up before I spent money updating mine.

I got a new iPod Nano for my birthday and naturally the version of iTunes on my computer isn't compatible with my new iPod. The new version of iTunes won't run on my OS. Then I bought new accounting software for our business and it won't run off my current OS. I also signed up for new online payroll and it's giving me a warning that I need to update my OS... DANG IT!

I have a 2004 iBook and it's OS is 10.3.9. At work I have 2007 iMac that runs 10.4.11. So for now I'm going to us the OS from my new iMac and install it. Then when we can afford it, I'll update to Leopard or whatever the latest and greatest.

I spent most of Sunday backing up all my files. Talk about a pain in the butt!!! I know it needed to be done. Everlast didn't have a chance to backup his computer when it went down. He's lost all of his business files and job photos... everything!

yep its a true pain but its a good thing too. On linux i've cron's setup to backup every single file in a single .zip file over internet.
Maybe you need a new laptop coz your current lappy's hardware may also not support new OS.
Times come & go, you'll comeover your issues very soon

Happy new year!

Did you write the cron tab yourself of is it 3rd party?
I always thought writing shell scripts for cron to run was a pain in the butt.

Oh I hope not. I can't afford another iBook anytime soon. With all the graphic design I do, I just prefer using a Mac. Hopefully the update OS will do the trick.

I did end up buying a LaCie external hard drive (only $93), so we can store our files. It claims one of the features is a backup program. We'll see how that works if not I might be asking you more about backup programs.

I'm not a mac guru, I'm a windows guy.. but something doesnt seem right here.. If you download the latest version of iTunes and attempt to install it..it says you need an OS upgrade? iTunes versions are always backward compatible from my experience.. you may need to install a patch or something along the lines of that.. can you perhaps post a screenshot of the error you are receiving when attempting the iTunes install?

I would hate to see you go through the trouble of an OS upgrade unnecessarily...

Buy a solid state hdd ( i think they are out now, don't know exactly ) for taking backups. if they are out and they are really solid state or you may say without a rotating disc then they are something nice for storing back ups.

VanR__ i wrote it in PHP, very easy and you can find some over internet as well.
