Snagin a work computer

1st off ATM this is a hypothetical situation. IF someone I knew grabbed a comp from work and BEFORE they powered it on they replaced the motherboard and then wiped the HD would they be good to go? Meaning the BIOS tracking "thingy" cant report back to lojack once that motherboard is taken out. Am I on target here?

well apprently this guy can get the motherboard for much cheaper than a comprable PC could be bought for. But to my 1st post would that work? replace motherboard and then wipe HD b4 connecting to internet. Thanks for your help BTW

Yes, most tracking units are built into the integrated circuits (mobo). Most tracking stickers are fakes and don't really have hardware tracking at all.

The IP will change according to whatever the DHCP server on the private network he uses it on. It won't help.
Even if it's used on the same network, it will lease a new address since the swiped HDD lost the last leased address unless that net uses static DHCP which circumvents the reason for using it so most don't.

If it's used on anther net, you'll never see the MAC address again because it's a physical address and not routed. New mobo=new WiFi NIC=new MAC

Just adding that in there before someone brings up MAC address.

You'd be shocked how many people on my home board argue that MACs are routed on the Internet...

if you are replacing mobo then it is basically a different computer(obvi with wiping the HD) the only thing that was actually had any sort of tracking(unless there is something new i havent really been up on my techness lately)is the cpu serial which you can turn off in bios anyway...unless its cia nasa etc i doubt you have to bother with anything other then wiping the hd just so no software is reporting back when internet connection found...so just wipe and use
