So recently i went to my doc and asked him a what a safe and good med would be for mood swings and feeling bi-polar, and he recomended Seroquel, I told him i wanted to do some research on it and then i will get back with him.
Is anyone on it or know anything about it? If i took it would gear affect it in any way, how about pramipexole?
I read it is used for schizophrenia also, which im not ofcourse.
I just need something to help me sleep better and calm down at night.

I tried some samples of it, knocked me out at night but in the am I would have worsened depression and thoughts of suicide...this is just my response to it, others vary...ambien does this to me as well

Good luck waking up the next day if you take that the night before. I used to be on 100mg for sleeping problems and had to quit taking it because I felt like a zombie for the first half of the day.

Atypical antipsychotic

Go to a qualified psychiatrist. Seroquel is a powerful med used to treat psychosis. It is typically not used to treat Bipolar Disorder. First, get an accurate assessment and diagnosis and then the correct medications to treat the problem. You may not be bipolar. Internists etc. know almost nothing about psychiatry or psychiatric medications.

Hope this helps,
Dr. Glock

Usually lithium is prescribed for bipolar disorder. Seroquel is a next generation anti psychotic. It affects serotonin and dopamines levels in the brain. It is an extremely powerful drug. I was prescribed some as a sleep aid. First time I took it i slept for 18 hours. Never again. Much better alternatives out there with less sides

depending on what is cousing it you may want to look into some other things. risperdal may be more to your liking. does couse extreme wieght gain. also the blood pressure medication tennax i think thats how its spelled can help. problem with seroquil bad spellin i know. can couse wicked headaches, and a few other really nasty side affects when the drug starts to wear off. granted i have never taken any of these but have alot of expierience with them due to my job. hope that helps. also if you are taking it for the mood swings the swing could me b much more intence to do the drug wearing off some thing to think about.

my doctor gave me that years ago to sleep.. didnt work.. he told me to double it.. i was still awake and went out.. sipped ONE beer over an HOUR fainted.. ended up with 6 stitches 13 cracked teeth and a skull fracture..

moral of the story is either get on something else or dont go outside after taking it.. i was only on 50mg also..

Seroquel is bad news. It's going to leave you semi-sedated all day, and what they don't often tell you is that for many it's very addictive. I have an ownership interest in a methadone clinic, doctor friend got in a jam and I jumped in to help him out financially.

I have no training in the medical arts, but have been there on occasion when he is doing groups. Everyone on Seroqul hates it, everyone that lives with them hates them after a few weeks as it dulls personality badly, and they all have bad withdrawal when they quit despite it not being thought of as addictive. Chills, skin temp. changes, vomiting, just out of it. I haven't heard a good thing about it from 30+ people on it.

Im currently on a low dose of Seroquel. I take 50mgs. at about 8PM and by 10 or 10:30, Im ready to sleep. I sleep clear through the night, and wake up at about 5:45AM for work feeling refreshed and ready to go. Anything above 50mgs, and you're going to feel like you're crawling out of your skin.

Like Second Act said, it can be addictive. This is the only thing I don't like about it, is I have a hard time falling asleep without it. But, on the flipside of that, I've used Ambien for my past insomnia and it worked, but it caused me to have short term memory loss. I work as an electrician in the country's third largest coal fired power plant, and Im alert all day without anything except 1 cup of black coffee in the morning. Again, it all varies from person to person. If you do choose to get it, try to keep as low a dosage as possible. In fact, when my doctor first put me on it, he told me to split the tablet in half and start with only half, then acclimate myself to it.

Of course, this is only 1 of 3 scripts Im on. Im also on Suboxone, which has been a Godsend, and Catapress, which I rarely take because my blood pressure is great without it.

Again, just be very careful if you choose it, and stick to a low dosage.

for me personally, even the 50mg was enough to knock me out and make it hard to wake up. i guess it varies on different people. i had to stop taking it as i couldn't function with it. felt like a zombie on it and always tired.

This is the most conservative dosage I have heard about. Glad it's working for you, it sounds like it is prescribed simply for sleep. The average dose I see is either 100mg at 5pm and another 100mg before bed. A lot are on 200mg at 5pm and 100mg before bed. It's a small area and it's possible I'm encountering a rogue psychiatric practice because I have never seen it prescribed that low.

Are you on suboxone long-term ? Or as typically prescribed ?

Im on Suboxone long term Second. I battled a very bad addiction to pain meds. I told my doctor, "I won't lie, I LOVE the way I feel from painkillers, but I just can't do it to myself anymore." The Suboxone has been a miracle for me. I take one 8mg/2mg tablet a day. I try to take it at the same time each day, but sometimes, I feel so good and don't have a thought about cravings, that I forget to even take it.

The Seroquel is precisely what you said. For sleep, but it also helps in combination with the Suboxone. From what I can gather from my doctor, who has been treating opiate addiction for the last 7 years, when people try to go on plain Suboxone, they often get depressed because they don't get the "high" they get from pain pills. The Seroquel helps this and also helps with sleep. I battled depression, addiction, and insomnia all rolled into one. This has been the only therapy that has worked for me. Of course, I think it all stems from my pain meds addiction. Ambien and Lunesta were prescribed at various times, and they worked, but the short term memory loss wasn't worth it to me.

Seroquel is pretty powerful, I won't lie. The first night I took it, I split the pill in half and told my girl I didn't like it. I kept on with it and after about 8 or 9 days, I was fine with it. Now, if I take it with the Catapress, Im a walking zombie the next day. I really don't need BP meds since mine stays around 110/68 to 117/72.
