I'm wondering what my BMI should be wile I'm training, What it should be for a show and how far out before a show should I start dieting?

Too many have placed too much emphasis on the body mass index by trying to make it the gold standard. I would be more concerned with your body fat composition and symmetry.

BMI really has nothing to do with competing. The most important thing is how you look on stage, and everyone is at a slightly different body fat percentage.

As far as starting a diet for a show, it really depends on what your starting point is. If you have a lot to lose, start earlier, and vice versa. A common prep time is about 15-16 weeks, but again, that REALLY depends on your starting point.

Ideal BMI should be between 18.5-25

25-30 over weight

30-40 obese

>40 morbid obesity

<18.5 underweight:star-wars

well said i agree 16 weeks seems to be common for prep

Yes hun, dont worry about BMI, it is the most inacurrate way to test your body fat. Either have some1 do a 7 site pinch test with a Lange skinfold caliper or do hydrostatic weighing..aka dunk tank..

Remember no judge asks you what your bodyfat is on stage. Its all an illusion. I have seen people with a higher bf% beat people on stage with a lower bf% its not just that you have to be worried about.. if you have any further questions you can PM me. I will try adn answer any questions you may have. I am a trainer and have competed. Take care

It always find it amusing when a question is asked and people give an answer to everything else , but the question at hand.

Here is a BM calculator

BMI / Body Mass Index is the most rediculous and outdated method of evaluating health and obesity out there.
I am an Exercise Physiologist in a Hospital based Sports Medicine, Physical Therapy, and Cardiac Rehab Clinic. In my Medical Assessment Room I have a beautiful wall chart of the BMI index with a HUGE red cirlce painted around it and a slash through the middle of it (Ghostbuster's symbol)!
We use bodyfat testing via Dexascan as part of our inintial screening and evaluation.
BMI on takes into consideration height, age, and weight. Put it this way, I am considered obese at less slightly less than 8% bodyfat by the BMI standards (It does not consider lean muscle mass). Please don't give BMI a second look my dear,......... This is considered "obese":

Yep. I would say do not go by BMI at all if you have built any kind of muscle in the gym because you will posses much more LBM than the average joe. I too am considered obese at a bodyweight of 225 lbs and 6 foot tall. None of my doctors luckily ever questioned me about my health since just looking at me they could tell I wasnt obese.

I do think though that life insurance companies will have a field day with you and call you high risk and jack your rates up. Anyone on here ever had that happen to them? I was stupid enough not to get life insurance early, and now I cant get it if I want it since I had my heart attack at age 38. Nobody will even talk to me since I had the heart attack and now have a defibrillator.

According to BMI....offseason my wife and I are both morbidly obese... when we are in contest shape..BMI puts her in the "overfat" range, and me still in the obese range. gotta luv BMI
