AKC Breeder

I bought my wife a yorkieshire terrier puppy for a Christmas present. Although it is a nice little pet we were lead to believe that this was a championship level bloodline however as the dog matures it is clearly not.

The dog’s muzzle is extraordinarily long and one that would never be considered an AKC standard Yorkshire Terrier. The AKC Yorkshire guide states “the skull should not be too prominent or round, the muzzle not too long”. the website of the breed we bought from clearly states “we breed to the AKC standard for the Yorkshire Terrier for size, color, and temperament”.

I disagree with this claim that they breed to the AKC standard and that this statement is false and misleading at best.

The breeder will not engage in conversation - not returning emails or voice mails. Does anyone have a recommendation of how to proceed?

inform AKC....

As a dog person, I only will buy a dog with AKC registration... now you can go through AKC and check their famly tree.. AKC requires them to show proof of I think it is 3 generations.. and if they are misleading about all you can do is have their registrions revoked.. buying pets are like buying used cars... you have to be very thorough or you get screwed.. once bought a dog and it died two weeks later from a virus in its blood.. nothig I could do because there wasn't a health guarentee.. do they breed other animals also?

If there is an online community where this breeder participates or even is aware of you may want to start there. This person is probably a puppy miller and I'm sure they would rather make you happy than have you alerting others about how they practice business. Hit 'em in the pocket book.

As a rule I stay away from AKC dogs but I'm not into "showing" a dog or breeding them for money. My aim is to get a healthy dog with a sound temperament and the way to get that is by getting the dog from someone who breeds (and I mean testing before breeding) for health and temperament. The majority of AKC registered dogs are bred to match a written standard first and all other aspects (health, sound temperament) come second.

That's why people spend $2000 on a dog and wonder why they spend an additional $1000 each year treating it for hip dysplasia, allergies, demodex and all the other treats that come along with owning a dog that was created by generations of breeding for looks first and everything else second. But to each his own.

I only buy with the AKC registration papers. The fact they have shut communication is a sign they don't really have a good reputation to protect.

Good breeders are also breeding out all of the negatives that you speak of at the same time.
