I had a great experience last week.

I'm no strong man. Never have been. But I did a strongman style workout last week at my cousin's Iron Sport Gym. Steve Pulcinella has been a strongman and highland games guy for many years and he specifically designed this for women and older dudes like me (47) who want to try something different to stay in shape. (The big boys did a more heavy-duty workout before us.)

It was a 5 station, 3 round, 45 minute conditioning workout. That's why there's hardly any weight on anything. The log lift, for instance, was as many reps from the ground to overhead as you can do in 45 seconds. Then run to the tire and flip it as many times as you can in the same amount of time etc etc.

Compare to what you guys normally do there was no comparison, but for me it was intense and fun. I got to pretend I was a strongman for an hour, I got a good strength and cardio workout and I almost threw up!!

That looks pretty cool. How often do the stongman competitors, do this type of thing?

I assume that they follow a standard routine in the gym pretty much and in addition to that do this? Or am I way off, I always wondered that.

Designbuilt- In case you havent already been able to tell, seldom are there strongman competitors that do cardio lol. It definately shows as well. I do cardio on my upper body days which is about 4 times a week. I use a 24kg kettle bell and a light tire(200lb) for cardio many times. Other times ill do shuttle run and jump rope intervals. But I have not heard of others that do the same thing. Some will do elliptical cardio or the stationary bike, but that usually all.
 
I still say that girl looks like she lifting as much as you!:D:p:D
 
That's awesome Mike. That type of workout will get you in way better shape than just regular lifting and cardio. Plus it's a lot more fun. Too bad you didn't puke, lol.

I have been gathering my own supplies to do strondman stuff on the weekends for GPP at my house.

Its quite easy.

Old tractor Tire. go to a poor boys tire shop or a find a farmer with old worn out tractor tires. you can usually get one free or they will sell it to you for under a 100$

Sled build your own
Option 1. plywood, car tire screwed to plywood. Bricks rocks etc for weight in middle. and a rope tied to tire, start pulling.

Option 2 go to steel shop ahve 1/2 steel plate cut at 2'wide 3' long. last 6" rolled to 30 degree up angle. weld in tabs on front for d ring hook up and 1" post in middle for weight plates. weighs in around 125-150lbs w/o added weight. Start pulling add weight plates for extreme heavy pulling

Farmers walk anything works here. get some pipe1"-2" galvanized, cut 6" long. Run strapping through it with some s hooks. Hook onto buckets with concrete, dumbbells, cement blocks, etc.

Option 2 8"-12" steel pipe cut a couple feet long weld on handles, fill with sand or concrete to desired weight.
dont forget to cap ends so sand dont poor out lol

thats jsut a short list and everything is fairly cheap, the custom sled cost me the most i think i got it all done for 150
