Top Powerlifter suffers stroke, BP related

"All time multi ply 242 record holder, Greg Panora (2,630 pounds), suffered a stroke this past Sunday. Greg was gracious enough to communicate with me this afternoon, and has issued the following statement to the readers of Powerlifting Watch:

"On Sunday, May 9th I woke up with slurred speech and limited use of my right arm. I knew it was a stroke immediately as this has been a life long scare from high blood pressure. Doctors believe I should make a full recovery and powerlifting is definitely still in the cards. Anyway, I would really like to thank my wonderful family and friends for their prayers; and mainly my amazing girlfriend Julie, who has slept on a love seat for 3 days and held my hand as I yelled and threw things. You're the most beautiful, amazing and caring human I've ever met. For everyone else, let this show you that none of us are invincible; and please get checked out by a doctor. Thanks everyone and don't count out 2,700 at 242 next year."

In my correspondence with Greg, he went on to say that, "I'm doing pretty well. Speech and right arm are still messed up, but I'll do a bunch of training".

BP guys....Check it ED!!!!! Learn to take your BP with a cuff and a stesoscope SP<?!!!!!! It is very easy to do. If Your BP is too high, back off the sauce!!!!

On reason why I get my blood tested and a thorough physical every 3 months. It is these types of incidents which makes us realize that we are in a high risk sport.

If you're too stubborn(or too stupid - fine line there) to back down your dosage at least take the proper ancillaries to control it!

I WOULD VENTURE TO GUESS THAT HE WAS ON NO BP MEDS.. i dont understand guys doing nothing for their bp.. no put the strain of heavy lifting behind the bp and you are gonna get nailed..
