I have seen many of videos where chains are hung from a monoloft or rack for suspended GM's. I was wondering if anyone know how to set this up. As far as thickness of chain, grade or thickness of clip holding the chains together.

Any advice would be great

The Westside guys all use 5/8 inch chain, but it's hard to find at local hardware stores, so I've been using 3/8 inch. This 3/8 chain is about 7 1/2 pounds per foot. Yuo can buy 5/8 from http://www.elitefts.com

Measure the distance of the lift. So for example, let's say it's 18 inches from yuor chest to the lockout on the bench. Now tie the chains to the end of the bar so that all the chain is lying on the ground when the bar is touching yuor chest.

Then, as yuo lift the bar out to arm's length, more and more of the chain gets lifted off the floor, making the weight yuo're lifting heavier and heavier as yuo get closer to the lockout.

Yuo can use the same technique for any free-weight lift that travels in a straight line up from the ground - squats, deadlifts, benches, overhead presses, etc.

Hope this helps!

DAD, I think eric wanted to know how to use the chains for suspended G/M. If this is the case the chain is looped over the top of the monolift and connected with a carbine. Place the bar in the chains and then measure from the floor to the bar to set the hight you want. You can adjust with the links and carbine, clamp. By doing this you can set the bar at whatever hight you want. Dad is correct about using chains for loading and deloading. Nicely done. Hope this helps.

olded,

Yuo know shortly after I submitted that post, I had the same thought yuo did. I think yuo're right - thanks for filling in the blanks!

thanks. Any clue how thick the chain and carbiner need to be?

My chains are 3/8" and certified to 7200lbs/chain. I just use a hooks that the link slides into and I think that's good for 7000lbs. Works just fine for me.

Just my two cents

Here's what I did: my dad had 3 full sets of truck-tire snow chains. I've been using those. What I did was fold them in half and tie a rope around the middle of the folded set of chains; they're about 3ft. long now. I put a small loop in the rope and throw the end of the rope over the bar and through the loop and use that to adjust the height of the chains depending on the lift then tie it off. It's been working great for me! Gained hugh amounts of strength from it. Hope this helps/gives some ideas.

i bought one complete set of 1/2" chain and then i took 5/8" and 3/4" chains from work 4 each ( i could always get more at work also if needed) and i cut them to 5' lengths ...total cost was like $100 ....the loop chain is 1/4" and is about 3' and has a small carabiner to connect it ...and then there is a large carabiner to attach the bigger chain ...the smaller chain and carabiners you can get at HomeDepot ...but the bigger chain is a little harder to get and will need some searching to find ...ive found it online ...but i got lucky that we have it on my job site ...
