How many of you(advanced bb´ers) do still regular DL? If not, why not?

I´m thinking of picking up deadlifts again on backdays, always felt my back/posterior got the thickest when doing them.

I have a hinge every back day. Conventional dead, rack dead, stiff leg. I credit a lot of my upper back, trap and lumbar development to years of heavy pulling for powerlifting (and also my under developed lats).

I've only been doing one top set to manage low back fatigue.

In any amateur BB show you can see who has put the time in to do heavy hinges.

I think most bodybuilders will do a deadlift variation - RDL or SSDL as they are almost a necessity for hamstring & glute development, rather than a conventional deadlift.

As for conventional deadlifts; I think there's a merit in new trainees (IE 0-2 years serious training) completing conventional deadlifts in the 3-5 rep range simply because they are one of the most effective moves for developing overall strength and also developing proprioception and correct use of kinetic chains. And I feel you need to develop a base level of strength before you can focus on developing size. And at this point your not exactly going to over tax CNS even with a 5x5rm set because your overall load is still relatively low.

I feel once you get outside of this period of needing to develop strength that deadlifts have limited use for bodybuilders. At this point you would be strong enough that performing dead lifts in 3-5rep range would create too much CNS fatigue - doing higher rep sets of conventional dead lift would create too much cardio fatigue. Hence why RDL & SSDL make a more sensible choice is pure muscle growth is desired.

I also disagree with dead lifts & variations being in back day. Yes it taxs the back musculature isometrically but the driving force is predominantly glutes & hammys so should be on leg day. I will die on this hill!

I usually will do a variation of a DL or at least some sort of hip hinge. I like to do large deficit deads. Feel like I get more out of those and can use much less weight.

I do rack deads a lot and a rack dead high pull variation, but I don’t deadlift from the floor anymore due to a compromised lower back

SLDL or Romanian DL but I never do classic deadlifts anymore - this exercise is too tiring for the CNS and, as a result, it affects the poorer regeneration of other muscle groups and does not provide much for hypertrophy to be included in a bodybuilder's training plan.
Yeah Eddie Hall (First man to deadlift 500kg) said his deadlift kept progressing until he hit 420kgs then he hit a plateu for years. He then spoke to specialists who told him the body needs 10 days to recover from deadlifts and he was doing them once a week. When he started doing deadlifts once every 10 days he broke the plateu and made progress.

Did them damn near every single week during my competing days. The results in overall thickness were for sure prevalent. Especially during my years of training with Oscar Ardon. Barbell Squats and deads were staples. Traps, back, hamstrings, forearms. I used to LOVE deadlifting. All the old school guys on the east coast back than who had a great back did them.

Not many guys do them anymore, unfortunately. I feel they are very beneficial for getting dense front to back.

I do racked deads for back and RDLsfor hams every week with one of the two days
I'll periodically do them (maybe once s month) from the floor doing sets of three progressing in weight with great control till my form breaks down.
I think its good to really tax the central nervous system now and then

I have deadlift or rack pull once every 2 weeks, my body can't handle squats and deadlifts every week, especially if I'm on a diet.

Smith rack deadlifts on back day, sometimes Smith SLDL on glutes & hams day.

Smith Machine SLDL and Smith Machine Sumo deadlifts. Just did them both a few days ago.

Regular deads don't go heavy at all(never more than 315) but do them slow and controlled and get a good squeeze at the top.

My mom is 74 yrs old and has recently found deadlifts. Her and my step father own a gym and every Thurs a group gets together for deadlift day. She calls me after every workout and tells me how she did. Last week she did a knee high rack pull at 325lbs w/o wraps! She's training for a meet in March. Unbelievable...it's pretty cool to watch.
I love deadlifts and do them regularly as well. IMO it's the best overall lift for strength and muscular development.

I don't know your situation but how do you progress doing the same weight for the same reps week after week? Im sure you'd get a pump but what progress can you really make like that? I feel like it would get boring to me.

I alternate between rack pull (start about two inches below my knee) and trap bar for my pull days. SLDL on my leg days. I haven't pulled a straight bar off the floor in about a year.

Still trying to progress and hit weight/rep PR's. I've never been a strong puller, but trying to train smart and hard so I can not act my age. Haha.

Well I have adopted a more.time under tension workout style as.I have gotten older. You can always go slower and do more reps and sets. I always try for more reps but don't make it easier by going faster. Is it ideal...I don't know but I get as sore as I ever have trying to move.weight. Would I train this way in my 20s...no. I do not get bored at all at the gym, I love that shit!

I know the feeling. After 20 years of dead lifting, my body is telling me that I’m too old😂
