The Mountain Dog diet - guiding principles

John,

I just wanted to say thank you so much for spending the time putting this together and sharing it with us. It's a fantastic read and I have been following your posts very closely since you started posting on the FF thread.

Fantastic work and I've learned a lot from you, I'm in your debt.

ED

P.S I have a hard time sourcing Coconut oil here in the UK however I can get hold of unsweetened desicated coconut easily. Does it make a difference which one I use or do they both offer the same benifits?

Nope - the unsweetened coconut is perfect too. Just toss a serving in a shake or sprinkle on something else.

Im obviously not John but i bet he tells you that the difference is in the animals stomachs. A bovine has a rumen and a chicken does not thus the difference in the fermentation process. I think he wants the chickens to be able to roam around and peck at some natural food sources but its not as strict as the cows.

The shells are stronger because the free range eggs are getting better nutrients thus making them a stronger egg. I grew up in Kansas and we would have to go to western Kansas to go pheasant hunting. There were no pheasants in easter kansas. One report i read said this was because the pheasants were getting better nutrients out west thus their eggs were tougher and able to withstand nature better. The further east the pheasants went, the weaker their shells were thus not very many were able to make it.

Exactly. Chickens can have some grain, it's not the end of the world as long as thet get their bugs, insects, etc. As a source of protein, I like grass fed beef waaaay better. Much more BCAA's, plus again you get CLA and high Omega 3 content that you don't get with chicken (although you can get a great dose of Omega 3 in eggs).

Bingo on the egg shells

John, whats your take on supplementing with aminos and liver tabs between meals ala Gironda and now Beverly international? Also also aminos before ,during, and after training ? I know Serano has some great products ......have you tried them yourself and on others? And what have you seen as far as results? I have my own opinions ,but I would like to hear yours first......

I have tried the beverly Liver tabs a bunch. To be perfectly honest with you, I'm not sure I felt anything out of the ordinary. I still have some at my desk at work though, and still take them..lol.

Now as far as aminos go - I used to take an instantized BCAA Glutamine mix called Glutacene. I drank it while training. It was unbelievable. It cut my soreness in half. The owner of that company who is a great guy, I believe sold them, and now owns a company called Double T. Anyways, I always liked Glutamine, Leucine BCAA type mixes DURING training. Even creatine and Waxy Maize - all that stuff just seemed to give me better results intraworkout.

Serrano has helped Beverly with their Density product (I think - not 100% sure), and definitely helped Infinity Fitness with their Muscle Synthesis product. They are both free form aminos. I do like free form amino during and after training, as they are not peptide bonded and get right into your bloodstream. I have actually never tried either believe it or not. I have sme Scivation Extend right now I got as a gift I am trying.

The other weird thing about me, is that I have always liked big meals before, and I mean right before, I train. That coupled with the intraworkout mixes, and I just ain't to hungry after I train, so I take the Free Form Aminos, then come back an hour later with a no fat shake with whey and some carbs.

John-Another thing i have noticed about eggs. Since i switched to free range eggs and compare them to my wifes store bought eggs (I dont share lol) the shells are much tougher and the yolks are orange instead of pale yellow. I have cracked some store bought eggs that you can almost see through the shells. Those eggs have a pale yellow yolk that is almost opaque! You tell me which one is better?

LOL...the Pale yellow is - JUST KIDDING -that's a crap egg. The orange one is loaded with beta carotene and other good stuff.

Mr Meadows.....in your opinion, are there any supplement companies which one should be wary of, in terms of them not meeting label claims and using inferior raw materials?

Honestly, I am no expert in that area. I do not know about all of these companies practices.

thanks for your input...i am highly interested in giving your suggestion to ED in using dessicated unsweetened coconut in place of coconut oil....its great to sprinkle on in between meal snacks/shakes yes?

What type of macro ranges do you start guys on? From your own diet you listed in the other thread, it looks like 1.5g/lbs protein, 0.5-0.8g/lbs carbs and 0.5-0.6g/lbs fats, is that close?

Do you prefer to increase or decrease calories by fats or carbs depending on the goal (lean gaining mode, contest prep) from this "baseline" diet?

What type and duration of cardio for off-season vs. contest prep?

Thanks :)

"what spices and condiments can do for your metabolism" can you please touch on this?

Also i cant find any grass-fed butter in stores where i stay but i can find raw milk... so could i make my own butter? i found a few how to sites for this...

John .....I agree......aminos are a useful tool .......I have had great results using some Girondas methods as a kid .....they aren't drugs but definately can increase gains without doubt......I have seen and experienced some nice gains with some solid amino proticals......I am glad you feel the same

Iabadman care to share or give us a little info into your amino protocols.

currently i am trying a creatine/glut/bcaa/extra leacine/lba and malto mix to drink during training and have found my recovery to be pretty good and energy in the gym good also but i have had slight hypo feeling at the end. i think i may be finishing the shake a little early in my workout.

Of course ......I am work so don't have enough time to really go into [tons of naked ladies to deal with you know .....lol] but if John is ok with me answering it here ,then I will ,if not ,just remind me to start another thread and I will give you my ideas on how to try supps .....trying things all at once isn't the most optimal way of doing so ........hilly ...decent protical rt there ......but supps like gear ....shouldn't be just throw together .....have a method to your madness so to speak ....and add slowly , inteligently , and know why you are adding what........I think this is what Dabrute tries to get the folks in his petitde forum to understand ........unfortunately most don't .....

Is it possible/likely that somebody who believes they are lactose intolerant (but can eat cheese and yogurt) simply cannot digest pasteurized milk? From my perspective that was almost inferred indirectly in your post. I would hope this is true.

It's very difficult getting enough protein in to grow when you can't digest milk or whey.

Edit: Also add eggs to that list.

What would you recommend for somebody like me, who has some sort of violent digestive reaction to most of what you propose is best?

Yes sir - the reduction in soreness is very noticeable when using a good amino protocall. With liver, I am eating a lb (at one sitting) every 2 weeks. As I wrote in the article, your liver can store Vitamin A, so it's a nice Vitamin A bomb meal every other week...!!

Mountaindog.... I like the idea of getting 85/15 beef grass fed in the offseason as opposed to 93/7 or 95/5.....

but it 75/25 too fatty even for grass fed or is it not a big deal if youre eating 8-16oz a day.

Obviously pre contest I would opt for much leaner but my question is geared towards offseason dieting.

Yes - I would say that 75/25 is just way to fatty, the biggest issue just being all the calories...If you are talking grain fed beef - I dont recommend any as a standard part of your diet. Just to much of an imbalance in Om 3 to 6. To much inflammation, and potential for issues down the road..

Hey John...quick update. I have changed NOTHING but added in 2lbs of grass fed beef the past 10 days and my strength (for me) is crazy and im vascular as hell.

At first I thought I was nuts until my training parterns were asking "WTF are you on?". Just wanted to thank you for your help.

2 lbs a day of grass fed beef?

I find it for about 5.99 a lb at Trader Joe's....

I'm still stuck on all the tricky wording of eggs though. Not sure if I should be keying in on FREE RANGE or ORGANIC or CAGE FREE :(
