WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO...

Bodybuilders are like actors...so many seem to have their "15 minutes" of fame, and then they are pretty much unheard of....many have untapped potential, while others made a good decision to hang it up.

I hope others are as curious as me...

What ever happened to:

1.) Darin Lannaghan

2.) Richard Baldwin

3.) Joe Nazzario

4.) Edgar Fletcher

5.) Matt Mendenhall

6.) John DeFendis

7.) Porter Cottrell

8.) Gary Strydom

9.) Franco Santoriello

10.) David Dearth

11.) Vince Comerford

I could go on and on, but I don't want to be a hog-poster....

I saw an article on J. Defendis in a magazine and he seems to be doing well personal training famous people. I "think" he went to jail for a while for something roid related. Dearth is training hard at Golds Cali and I think he's going to compete again. I also saw Franco in a mag and it showed him getting crazily out of shape and taking a miracle supplement and getting back in contest shape. Fletcher is in mags all the time advertising bb clothes. I'm also interested in Strydom as he had monster potential. Unfortunately he screwed himself via the WBF(Vince's thing).

tricepfreak 03-08-2003 07:57 AM

Thanks for the info....

...a guy in the gym says that Lannaghan is gay, and that he is involved in gay porn...which made me cringe considering the potential he has (had?)...I suggested he was misinformed - which I said, I guess, because I did not want to consider it as true.

I've also thought that Mendenhall's potential was tremendous - as to why he called it quits has always baffled me as well.

Regards...JB:)

PHIL HERNON 03-08-2003 10:22 AM

Well

The first two guys were not even pros, just gym guys with maybe big arms. John Defendis is doing very well in Florida running a personal training business. He never went to jail by the way.The other guys, all with great physiques, just decided it was time to go on with a normal life. We all dont need to always be in front of the Magazine editors saying, "Here I am, here I am, look at me".It is not a matter of "Whaty ever happened to", it is more of a choice to not diet down and try to gain the appreciation and applause of people anymore. These guys have nothing to prove, and most could do very well in the olympia still, today.
Another reason asked is, when is this taking a too big of a toll on my body? Do I want a normal life for the rest of it, or do I want to keep chasing trophies? Some people mortgage their future in the wear and tear on their physiques, taking way too many supplements. Others, the more genetically gifted, dont do as much damage and can continue to compete at an older age. I have to hand it to the over 40 olympia guys, they look awesome. They dont look toxic at all, very healthy. It shows me that Vince taylor is just a genetic FREAK!! Many dont look at him like that, but the man looks 25 years old. To me, that is the kind of freak I aspire to be, although I look weeks older than 25 already, ahahhhaahahha.

Thanks for the reply, Phil...

...how well I remember when you were competing. You were a cut above most...I have to ask you though - where are you in your assertation...is there a viable reason why you are not knocking them over in competition?

I also agree with your comment that many bodybuilders who move on are really just setting priorities...family, career, and a home are more important.

...also true is are your views concerning genetics and ability. It's too bad more cannot see the light. Denial can be so blinding, and it's also an incredible waste of time. I know that firsthand.

I hope your life is blessed, Phil.

Dearth is alive and well, and had a booth with cool Aaron Baker at the Arnold. Defendis writes for RX magazine. Mendenhall, Strydom, Cotrill have all had their day IMO.

well Stry and Cotrell had their day as although both had a somewhat short pro careers , they had a chance to do some damage and such (Cotrell surprised me as i never suspected from his pro card amateur win he would become such a contender in the pros)

Mendenhall never had his day never garnering the pro status and never fulfilling his phenomenal genetic potential

perhaps no one's fault but his own or perhaps also a bit of bad fortune--still a shame , might have been one of the true greats

What ever happened to:

1.) Darin Lannaghan ---- Gay porn/prostitiution

4.) Edgar Fletcher ---- Quit competeing, finally realized that using the same drugs and same routine year after year without going off isn't the way to win a show.

7.) Porter Cottrell ---- Retired after injury.

8.) Gary Strydom ---- Retired after WBF went belly-up.

9.) Franco Santoriello ---- Herion addiction. Making a comeback, or at least trying to.

10.) David Dearth ----- Coke addiction, now painkiller addiction. Still training, even though he's still using "something" that's giving him purple Tom-Princesque track marks up the veins on both biceps and 2 nice, big abcesses on the inner crease of his left elbow.

tricepfreak 03-20-2003 06:12 PM

wow.....

Darin Lannaghan - prostitution????

Nssca 03-23-2003 03:06 AM

Porter posted on a board a little over a year ago how he went through, as he described it "Hell" normalizing his system. He said specifically DECA was the worst on ones system to recover from. Can't remember which board all this was on.

Dave_19 03-23-2003 03:15 AM

Yea this is a fucked up game.. I hope im never on anyones list, unless its a list of succesful bbers

dpsquat 03-23-2003 07:37 AM

i saw porter

yesturday at a bb show! He looks like he is in good shape still and healthy. Porter by the way is a very nice guy and easy to talk too!'

Franco well he is in the cin oh area and well im not airing the rumors that are floating about him.

Nssca 03-24-2003 02:33 AM

I hatted to see two drop out of sight, that I thought would rattle some cages on the pro level: Phil Hernon and Mike Francois(Spelling). But in both cases it was not a choice to leave. Peace

Any hopes of a come back Phil ?

gravityfighter 03-24-2003 03:33 PM

Mendenhall

I read a while ago Matt kept coming down w/ flu like symptoms had to live on antibiotics.....everytime he would get off, the symptoms would disappear...guess if I had a choice of the flu or gear I'd have done the same...the guy sure had the look, life's a bitch sometimes :-(

dtlannaghan 11-20-2008 07:25 PM

dtlannaghan is fine and well

[dtlannaghan] I am here to set the record straight.. I am not gay.. I have not done gay porn.. and i am not a gay prostitute.. I have done nude photos and that is it!! I left the sport after my last compition. The reasons for my departure was simple the judging is terrible... I did not want to take the amount of drugs that it takes to go further in the sport.. And most of all, at the time I was married and my daughter was 10yrs old.. And if any of you have competed it is a very selfish selfcentered sport.. I live and work in Los Angeles CA. I have gone back to being an electrician, which is the trade I was working prior to moving to LA back in 1990. This sport is one that chewes you up and spits you out.. You have every magazine promissing you the would of contracts and the potential to make money.. Photographers take your picture asking you to sign an open ended modle release form, with the promiss that after you hit the mags your life will change.. and they are the only ones that make the money by selling your photos to whichever mag will buy them.. I wish all of you the best of luck in the sport..

Hi There - I just ran across on your site that says "Whatever Happened to...?"
It show Franco Santoriello in the number 9 or 10 spot and the update says that he has a heroin addiction and is trying to make a comeback...
to give you a true update, Franco does not have a heroin addiction and is not trying to make a comeback. He is clean - no steroids, nothing - he is married (to me 8 years next month) and we have a 7 year old - Frankie - he looks exactly like Franco! His body, his build, his face, his nose, his hair, his toes and his toenails! No exageration - he is Franco's "mini-me"!
You can go to myspace.com/storybookj and see Frankie - he seriously looks just like his Daddy and he is his Daddy's best buddy! The two are very close!

Off the top of my head, I don't know if I have any pictures of Franco on there - Right now he out of shape - he has serious back problems and needs surgery - he has serious pain and is working with a physical therapist that we know to help his training so he just recently started training again - I don't think his plans are to compete again, though he hated the way he retired from bodybuilding so you never know!

We are working on a couple of things - one is a book, the other is a health & fitness product (nothing like Cybergenics...which, incidentally was a pretty good product - people never got past taking the product and didn't do the workout which was what made Cybergenics work!!! One could have all the best steroids - top of the line with a great cycle, but if you don't eat right and do the training, it's not really going to do much for ya, you know?)

Franco is working hard, he does a lot of in-home client personal training, we are writing the book- and we are developing a health & fitness product. Franco is born again - he puts God first and everything else just kinda falls into place!
He is a great husband (drives me absolutely crazy sometimes, but...still a great guy). he is a really good father! He also has a daughter that his ex-wife has custody of - soon she will be 18 and she will be able to do what she wants - his ex has caused him a lot of pain by keeping his daughter away, but that too is falling back in place and they are building a relationship again!
She has that Santoriello genetics so I think we are going to see her on the stage soon! She took some amateur pics - she looks great and she was only 16! She wasn't ready to compete at the time, but if she keeps it up, she will be!

Right now we living right outside Philly, but we are getting ready to move back to the Jersey Shore! We can't wait!

So...that is what happened to Franco!
I apologize for long email - I get really upset when people make assumptions about my husband and put an image of Franco strung out on heroin in people's mind! He's a great guy, he has had a lot of pain in his life, but also a lot of joy - he is very kind and loving - he is not afraid to show his emotions, not afraid to love or enjoy life!
My name is Jana (rhymes with banana) - people either forget my name or don't remember how it's pronounced, so I am more commonly known as Franco's Wife!
I am proud to be his wife - faults and all, he's one of a kind and we haven't seen the best of him yet! Feel free to write me back if you have any questions, or write Franco - he considers it an honor that his name is still tossed around in the bodybuilding world and that he is not forgotten!
Take care! Peace and God Bless you!

Thanks for that post Big A, we shouldn't make assumptions, unless we are 100% sure, and even then we should not be judgemental.

I think you missed Matt Duvall in that convo as well. Last I heard, he was supposed to make appearances on WWE raw. Never heard from him again afterwards. Anybody know if he's still bbing?
