Your thoughts on pure unflavored GELATIN as a protein source?

hey Phil,

it actually makes the profile of beef much much better! Did you know this? I'll check a source and get back to you on this...I forgot their wording though...something like bioavailability or bioeffectiveness or something was rated 97 with just beef an 99 with beef + gelatin. I forget what they were measuring the conclusion was that adding gelatin was a GOOD idea.

Interesting

What I do not understand is that you guys think that gelatin is a complete protein.........it is not. It is also low in isoleucine, threonine, and methionine.

What I always wondered is how the hell you turned pro on only LBA protein. :D IIRC you said it was pretty much your only protein source, but people died decades ago from being put on weight loss diets consisting of mostly collagen protein shakes - they presumably got deficient in essential nutrients.:D

I read that article on the knox gelatin diet. I think thats the only food they were ingesting. I used LBA as my sole protein source, but other foods contain amino acids.......I ate veggies, fruits, etc.........I did not JUST drink LBAs, hahahahha. Now, after I turned pro I used LBA between meals only......with other protein sources for my main meals....then I gained 12 more pounds in 1 year...........live and learn

Alright. :)

As of a few weeks I'm finally on the Gelatin Train. I would buy from TP but since I'm in Europe and poor I have to use a gelatin powder product made by a European supplement manufacturer. They even have a post workout drink with 10 grams of gelatin added to aminos, whey hydro, carbs etc, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's due to the hype you've given this supplement over here on PM. :D I remember Weider being criticized for scamming customers by putting gelatin in their proteins as a filler but now it seems this oldie but goldie is being resurrected. :D

Hahahhaha

Yes I remember that! His markups are AMAZING, hahaahhah

Understood

^ most of the studies I read used 10g of gelatin protein per day on top of a normal diet. After 2-3 months there was improvement in mobility and decrease in joint pain.

I'm interested in hearing more reports about people that used gelatin protein successfully. I understand those with a vested economic interest in selling LBAs...but I don't want this to turn into a LBA vs Knox thread honestly. Like I said I dont want to tread on anybody's toes...I just want to hear experience about gelatin protein from ya'll since you are the vets :)

I can appreciate where you are coming from. You are interested in the efficacy of gelatin for joint health/muscle building, and if from this discussion you conclude that gelatin is something you can believe in, then the side benefit is that LBA's gain even more credence. I might be wrong on this, but from what I have been able to gather, the concentration of gelatin per serving size is a bit higher in LBA's compared to Knox. The glycerol and tryptophan add a little more bang for your buck.

What do you think? It supposed to have joint healing properties and also is a source of amino acids for muscle building. I just bought 256 grams of pure gelatin protein for 7 dollars. Thats ABOUT as cheap as protein from beef (if you consider that 140g of protein per pound of beef and beef is about 3.50-4.00$ a pound). No preparation necessary, just dump gelatin powder in cup and add water and drink immediately (quick lest it congeals on you!). It even comes in handy packets (each packet = 8g protein).

Do you think this will work as a good source of protein? I am planning on consuming it in between meals (3 packets or in other words 24g protein) 2x/day as a way to get some extra protein in and help soothe joints from heavy lifting. I heard about guys using it in PWO shakes.

Kinda strange I know to be eating the ligament and joint tissue of other animals. But we eat their muscles might as well branch out to other parts of their body haha :D

thoughts...?

We do use it daily,,,not as our solde source for protein,,,but for some additional needs.

I remember seeing this somewhere as well. I will look it up.
