Momentum is why it is easier than the floor ... your hips are weaker than your back and you can drive them thru without the bar already in motion.
 
thanks. that sounds like a good explanation. Even after this weekend I'll need to keep working the 18 because it'll come up again in a later contest in IL. It'd be nice to get at least 5 or 6 plates on it.
