I always wondered why they don't see where the lifter bottoms out with the bar then set stands up on each side at that point in case this shit happens. I guess the same as squating in a rack in case you don't come back up with no spotter you can just drop it.
Ive been using a false grip now for about 20 yrs and never even come close to dropping a bar. I would say though that its not safe doing it on a max attempt like that since you are pushing yourself to the limit with the load. I would never use a false grip on a max attempt.
I saw a bar drop on a guys neck in a meet but this is 10 times worse. That spotter was first off not even paying attn, then when it dropped he still did not react to quickly very poor spotting and hopefully that guy never spots again for anyone else. I think all spotters should be trained before they are allowed to step on that stage
im sure he 2 guys spotting are haveing some major issues right now
the way it slipped out i dont know if they would have caught it
but probably kept it to just an injury instead

Yeah, the momentum that bar had was incredible. That was a bit over 400 lbs and dropped real fast. They could have lessened the impact some though and maybe he would have survived. Hard to say really.
I was once spotting a guy squating a bit over 800 lbs and his suit tore at the bottom of the movement and he got stuck and just me pulling him up from behind was all he needed to get up. A little bit of help goes a long way in a case like that, but in this case that bar was free falling. Not sure if there is much to be done for a free falling bar.
same shit as DUI and killing someone in accident... same level of Stupidity
What the fuck are they doing ? If you agree to spot then spot, not to just sit watch the mother fucker DIE.... FUcking pieces of Shites, fucking turd nuggets buy one get one free

They sure werent very attentive. I once was flat benching dumbells, think it was only maybe 130 lbs, but I almost never used dumbellls. Well, something happened mid set and my left tricep just totally gave way up toward the top when I was trying to lock out and the dumbell still in my grip came crashing down toward my face. The guy spotting me saw it and directed it off to the side of my head and I was able to toss it then. If it werent for him I probably would have caved my head in.

LOL. Yeah, I thanked him but we just moved on as if nothing had happened. He did say that I scared this shit out of him! It was one of those days when I was in doing my regular routine and he showed up with another buddy and I decided to join in with them and do their routine. I guess they do dumbells a lot. I really had to guess on the weight, seems it was too much for me LOL!
In all seriousness, use of thumbless grip should be illegal in all powerlifting competitions. Someone should start an International Spotters Certification course for these events.
Checked that vid again and he wasn't using a thumbless grip. Bizarre how it got away from him. Sweaty palms? Damn, $0.10 forth of chalk could've saved his life.
I seperated my ribs in similar fashion with only 315 doing some warmup reps.. I had full overhand grip with thumbs wrapped etc but since was in warm up mode it was reckless thinking doing "just" warmup reps so not focusing on keeping my wrists/grip locked and set which caused my right wrist to start shifting and as it started to roll back my body subconsciously let my right arm just give way to keep wrist from snapping ultimately causing my left side to follow suite allowing the bar to make an immediate drop and bounce off my chest/torso right under nipple/pec line... as soon as i caught the weight racked it and sat up I could literally feel the snap crackle and pop on the right half of my rib cage.... took close to 3 mo with a heavy regiment of ghrp/cjc to get healed but every cough sneeze or sudden twist would feel like i started back at square one in my recovery... I think I was lucky the drop was on my initial push up when I still have full lungs with breath held as I dont start my exhale until the remain push using majority of triceps... now I always wear wrist wraps and never maintain a false/monkey grip w/o thumbs...
