It has become a common practice to opt Ayurveda for arthritis treatment when other forms of medicine have failed. But, many have failed to speculate the range and power of this time tested medical system that has become a part and parcel of Kerala for centuries. ‘Vata dosha’ is attributed to this condition and according to Ayurveda improper digestion as a result of improper eating habits and lack of physical activities to digest the consumed food are all causative factors. These toxins get accumulated in weaker parts of the body usually the joints and as a result pain and inflammation result. Certain factors trigger the symptoms in susceptible individuals like certain infections, environmental factors and physical condition of the body. Older people were once considered under the risk list but now this is a disease that can even affect the younger generation too and can develop suddenly or even gradually. The symptoms associated with arthritis can be suppressed but long term solution and elimination of the disease in its entirety is the target in Ayurveda. But, for this certain sacrifices like proper eating habits and a systematic life style must be adopted and practiced even after the course of treatment. Ayurveda believes in eating simple and easily digestible foods and in limited quantities and advices patients to avoid foods that have opposite effects. Dietary restrictions and a holistic approach to therapy with complete belief in the system is the key in Ayurveda to keep diseases away and achieve complete health and fitness.
