TOR is NOT as anonymous as you think it is. You're still using the main backbone (IXP's) routers to route traffic and all it takes is the Fed to make Comcast, TWC, Cox, or AT&T open up a backdoor into the router and your info is wide open. Don't think that hasn't happened already, btw.
You want to stay safe? Be anonymous in every way. Anything that requires you to purchase an account that doesn't accept an anonymous payment method is something you don't want to use.
Free accounts? Sure, but make sure you NEVER tie anything personal to it. In fact, it's better to have a laptop that's dedicated to just your personal activities and only connect via TOR, Proxies, VPN, and goto Starbucks and use their WiFi.
I used to work in IT (Cyber Security) for a Fortune 200 company and I can tell you the articles you read on the internet about how to maintain anonymity aren't telling you the dirty details. The control I had over people's lives was disgusting, and I didn't have near the technical capabilities the Government does.
