The FBI was able to use "a small string of code in [encrypted Swiss messaging app, TeleGuard] used to send push alerts" to a suspect's phone to catch him. This was made possible by "a little-known quirk of push alerts... Those tokens can be used to identify users and are stored on servers run by Apple and Google, which can hand them over at law enforcement’s request." Privacy activists are concerned about how, under varying legislators or without proper regulations in place, this "data could be used to surveil Americans."
