I am going to compete for the 1st time next year so I am not an aficionado by any means but my friend who competes has stressed to me that right now my focus should be on gaining as much muscle/size as possible and eating a lot (clean if possible) then I'll diet down. I wanted to try and lean down and then put on lean muscle but he advised otherwise.

thanks for the help bro!! any input is good enough.

Doesn't the weight class top out at 176? Instead of jumping to the next class why not just train to put on the 6 additional lbs as lean mass and come in full and conditioned to the max! There are more than a few prep specialists on here that could see to this.

thought about that but i might be too tall for that class, i mean 5'9 compared to guys that are 5'6 5'5 and great conditioning, i don't have a chance.

I know what you mean at one time i was in the middleweight class and i am 5ft 7in tall and i moved up to the light-heavy's .

I think what was said is good advice about hitting the top of the middle-weights
6 more pounds of muscle @the same bodyfat is a good start.
If you find out you might need more later then add the weight.
You might want to try a coach out ,there are some good guys on this board(i am going to do this )
They can take the guess work out of it................

BTW you look good .....

I wouldn't do a dirty bulk.

Hiring a coach is your best bet.

OP I was in the same boat as You yrs back & realized that even to be a 5'9 lt.heavy is on the tall side, why I have decided to only do physique from now on....although hiring a coach would be the best way to go if looking to stay on the BB side

I did the Sac as well, you looked good and much bigger than 170. The night show was crazy, your last guy walked off stage and I was about to walk on for light heavys and they had me stop so they could bring your class back out to re-judge it.....never seen that before.

You need to stop guessing and work on your pattern development.

What would a dirty bulk do? Make you fatter and less healthy.

What would a clean bulk do? Make you fatter and less healthy.

While you are ultimately going to gain SOME body fat, you don't have to stop being very lean.

If you eat (x) amount of calories or macros, wouldn't a rational answer to be to bump up just slightly until you progress? Taking a random shot in the dark makes no sense.

Increase your protein by 5g/meal for a month. Check progress. Increase pre/intra/post WO carbs for a month. Check progress. No progress? Increase another 5g. Etc.

Same for training. 200lbs now? Bump it to 205... 210... Slowly. Not gaining? Look at your nutrition.

This isn't magic by any means. There are no "tricks". You don't have to force feed yourself into digestive issues or hire Hany Rambod and start the magical FST-7 program.

If you hire guys like Shelby and John, they essentially will do the same thing. Smart, logical progress. It's why they're so successful.

best advice i've had so far.. thanks bro

nah man you look good. Dont listen to that guy.

You have REALLY nice lines and make 170 look big esp at 5'9". Im a middle at 5'6" so I know what you are saying. With this being your first show I think you said you did awesome.

You def have some potential.

You can DEFINITELY grow without getting fat. All my guys do so in the off season. I run scooby prep.

You need to just get everything in line. Supps, food, training and rest. Also you cant rush it. My guess is within a years time your best bet will be adding 8 lbs muscle coming as a sharper 176 middle. This just takes time man.

But you can definitely grow without getting fat.

Nonsense, you look good, look like you have good lines from the pic you put up, and look bigger than 170. I'm sure your a little light in the legs @ your height and weight but thats nothing that can't be improved on. Spend money on a coach/diet guy. Shelby, Alex if he's still on here, John Meadows, or Phil Hernon are all worth double what they charge.

They can best help you gauge how to move up a class, but like Tom said first shoot for the very top of middleweight. Six solid lbs of muscle and being peeled to the bone would be better than 15 lbs of bullshit in the middle of lightheavies.

Spend money on help and you will cut wasted time in half if nt more.
