Are metric plates heavier? Question to the well traveled guys.

Old timer has it right.....at least in USA....if you're not using high quality plates such as eleiko....the cheaper versions can vary as much as a pound or more...I think Brad castlebury might have collected all the under weight plates...lol!

There is no difference among kg to lb. The only difference is between calibrated and non calibrated plates. Calibrated plates are typically accurate in weight to within a few grams. Standard non calibrated are often off by a few lbs (esp 45s and 100s (lbs) or 20s 25s and 50s (kgs)). As far as different feel goes, many other things can factor into this. Being in a different gym, using different bars, and especially when lifting heavier the width of the plates can effect the whip on the bar which can all effect how heavy a given weight feels. I'm guessing these are the factors at play, not the actual weight itself.

I always felt like the old steel plates seem heavier then the new rubber coated with the holes.

I was actually talking about carrying the plates themselves, without a bar.

Plates can vary significantly. The older York plates all had machining marks on them as they were ground to exact weight. Some of the cheaper ones metric or not are just pulled out of the mold and sold at whatever weight they happen to be.
