Cpap users, which mask do you use?

I just started cpap therapy recently. I ended up getting a nasal mask. However it's only been a few days but I'm still not used to it. I heard there are benefits to breathing through your nose so I am going to try to stick it out.

Any one else have similar problems with the nasal mask? I've been more of a mouth breather for most of my life and lately I've been getting some nasal congestion so it's been making it a bit difficult to use the nasal mask. With the nasal mask I need to keep my mouth completely closed for it to work or else the air will leak out of the mouth.

Should I stick with it or ask for a full mask?

Full face. I have a deviated septum as well as extreme obstructive sleep apnea so using the in nose mask is completely out of the question for me as I am a mouth breather. When I used to bulk up to 240+ it would actually get so bad I would have to take breaks while eating to breathe through my mouth between bites of food because I would be suffocating chewing without being able to breathe again soon enough.

I have been using it for 4 years and I am very comfortable with it now. Any mask will be uncomfortable and odd feeling for the first few months, then after a while you start to forget it's even on your face. I used to wake up in the middle of the night and see my mask chucked halfway across my room because I ripped it off in the middle of my sleep and threw it from being uncomfortable. Eventually, I stopped doing this in my sleep and I am totally used to it and it's very comfortable and manageable.

If you can breathe through your nose perfectly 100% no issues, then pick whichever is more comfortable for you. I literally could not use the in-nose one though due to my deviated septum coupled with my tendency to always breathe through my mouth.

Full face mask as sometimes I breathe through my mouth.

Full face mask. There is no way a nasal mask is going to work for a guy like me, I sleep with my mouth open and drool

I don't see how anyone can use a nasal mask only. As soon as your mouth opens, the purpose is defeated.

I can keep my mouth closed for the most part, but then it takes me awhile to fall asleep. It just feels harder to breathe through my nose with the nasal mask because of the pressure. I'm going to wait a month then ask for a full mask.

I'll probably use the face mask if my sinuses are acting up. Apparently nose breathing is better for you because your body actually gets more oxygen. It fluctuates for me because my sinuses gets stuffy throughout the day. I haven't been able to figure out whats causing it. I ended up getting a turbinate reduction because of the constant sinus inflammation.

Full face. Took sometime to get use to it, it felt like someone was holding their hand over my mouth. But after some adjustments I wouldn't change to a nasal pillow.

I use the nasal pillow with a minimal strap. No chin strap. My pressure is 15 so its a little much for this type of mask. It will leak if I move too much. I was a mouth breather but I've adjusted well. I wake up to a wind tunnel coming out my mouth here and there but it keeps getting better. It's awesome to be able to sleep on my back again.

Lmao I have the same but there is a strap over the top of my head too.

I sleep with a pillow jammed under my chin - like cuddling it to keep my mouth shut. It's not perfect but works.

CPAP changed my life, I was living in a fog for years, probably lucky to get 2 hrs real sleep a night. Took me about a week to get used to the mask though.

Lol I took that pic for fb tagging my wife and said come to bed baby haha. Anyway, yeah I was pretty much the same way. I was relying way too much on stims to get through my day. I haven't been on it long but I'm already feeling the difference. My sleep study said my o2 was down to 59%. That couldnt have been good. 20 events per hour and rem sleep starved. Now I'm down to 1 to 3 events per hour.

I have tried a # of different masks and can't sleep with any of them. Currently have the nasal pillow mask.

I have the full Bane mask [emoji2]

Haha exactly. It's always fun when I'm dating a new girl and it's my first time sleeping over and I whip out this ridiculous machine with tubes coming out of it and wrap the bane mask around my head and tell her I need this so I don't die in my sleep

Hey not to hijack the thread here but I just found out I have sleep apnea. Went and had a sleep study done and came back that I have both types of apnea. The obstructive one and I think the other is when your brain fl fails to send the signals to your body to breathe. So I was talking to quite a few people that have apnea and said that once they got their CPAP machine or BiPAP machine that the sleep was that much better. One guy even stated to me hell I didn't even know what sleep was till I start using my machine. So I guess my question here is is the sleep really that much better and do you really get that sense of feeling totally refreshed and energized when you wake up using the machine as opposed to before you would use the machine?

Not only is the sleep quality a thousand times better (aka you're actually in REM sleep while you're sleeping), you won't have a stroke in the next 10 years if you start using your cpap every night. I don't think a lot of guys realize just how serious it is to leave sleep apnea undiagnosed or untreated. Everytime you apnea in your sleep, you are cutting off oxygen to your brain, and putting your heart into severe overdrive.

My sleep specialist said I would've almost undoubtedly had a massive stroke before turning 30 if I didn't get my cpap (I'm 23 and have extreme obstructive sleep apnea). I believe him too, I've woken up many times in the middle of the night from apnea'ing and my heart rate was through the roof and I was gasping for air. I listened to a recording my family made of me sleeping once and I would literally stop breathing for up to a minute in some instances, hundreds of times per night. That, accumulating night after night for years, will guaranteed lead to cardiovascular issues down the road, or in the near future.

I use a resmed swift fx nasal pillow.

I tried full face and the full nose covering ones but I could never get comfortable with them and I HATE the lines they were leaving on my face. I have to use a chinstrap to keep my mouth closed, but I sleep a million times better with the nasal pillow, it just takes a little getting used to.

I go for my sleep study tomorrow, I've already been told I stop breathing 30 times an hour.
I love reading all your experiences so I can learn and follow this!

LOL! Never thought of that. Too funny!
