English Bulldog Thoughts

I am very intersted in purchasing an english bulldog to keep my girlfriend and me some company. I know of the higher cost of the dog and that they require much more grooming etc and I actually look forward to those responsibilities. I love the personality these dogs have and their overall demeanor.

My question for you is what has been your experiences with them? Anything I need to be aware of that wouldn't be in the extended encyclopedia version of the bulldog book that my g/f made me read

I'm so excited right now I can't stop thinking about them haha. Attached is a pic of one of the pups that is currently available from the breeder we have found!

Thanks all!

Also, if you just want to respond with general comments or thoughts with your contact around them I'd love to hear any and everything!

Similar to having a drunk 40 year old hanging out around your house. Farting and burbing!:) They are great companion dogs, great with little kids too. They do shed quite a bit though. If raising them from a pup, you will get many things chewed up, mostly everything.

I have a bulldog mix...an olde english bulldog (leavitt line bulldog) that is half english and the other half is american bulldog, pit bull and bull mastiff. Hence, he is taller than a normal english, can run a lot faster, doesn't have as severe of breathing problems, farts a lot but doesn't snore. He was also less expensive. If interested, I purchased mine from www.bulldogbreeder.com. I don't believe they have any pups currently, but the breeder, Janice, is SUPER nice and may know someone that does have pups.
or just search for Olde English bulldog in your area and breeders may come up.

that aside, that pup sure is a cutie! best of luck to you!

I have an English bulldog, but mine is completely differnent than most. He is on the aggressive side. I have no idea why. But he jumps super high and is not friendly with dogs, and goes kind of nuts when people come by the house.

As he aged he calmed down a bit. He's a little bit slower, but still a little fiesty. Right now he is 7 years old. He's not as muscular as he was as a 3 year old, but still a big dog at least for an English. Here is a pic of him, he's tough to shoot, because he doesn't hold still.

But mine is definately an exception, they for the most part are very sweet dogs. As far as health issues, they usually have breathing problems and chapped skin near the wrinkles in the face, so you need to keep them moist with some kind of Jelly, the vet will tell you how. My dog doesn't have breathing problems though.

They also tire pretty easily during long walks especially in the summer.

i have 2 english bulldogs they are great but dont like other dogs just each other if you do get one dont buy anything unless it is akc registered all the other ukc,nkc ect will basicly regiter a ham sandwich with akc they have very strict guidelines and you will get a pure bread pup expect to pay 1800 + for one good luck

My english bulldog is great. One thing I would recommend is cage training. My dog was cage trained by the breeder and it makes things a lot easier for you. I've had less medical issues with him than I did with my Jack Russell. Just the normal stuff and slight skin condition he gets a couple times a year. Great companion dog and smart as can be. I taught him to roll over in 15 minutes. Which is not an easy task for a barrel chested dog. He is on the skidish side and tends to be very cautious of anything new. I got him at six months so he was already potty trained and didn't mess with anything in the house. Funny thing about him is he knows swear words. He always goes in his cage when I watch a Browns game. :)

Thanks for all your input guys/gals! I appreciate it!

I really think we picked out a breeder already which happened to have one of their bulldogs in the movie with George Clooney about the football team. So needless to say they are a little pricey (2500-3500) but you really are paying for good health, good bloodlines, AKC registering and hopefully a good mannered dog as well. We are going to see them in December and get one sometime in the spring to summer months. I just want a lazy dog to lay around with me that has a lot of personality. From what I have read/experienced they are good companion dogs which is what I want however probably not what I need...needy dog and needy g/f!?!?!? haha

Thanks again!

Eventhough my dog is mean with most people; he loves my wife and my son to death.

He's a very good watch dog when I'm not around.
Besides, when my father in law did come in with his grandson, the dog just jumped on them a little, and gave them a kiss, he's probably just misunderstood and really wants to say "hi" It's just that with a dog that big, he can be pretty scary and intimidating, but as he aged he calmed down a lot.
He is a very good dog, one of the best I've ever had.

As far as the price, that's not too bad at all. I paid about that much I think maybe $2700 or so, I don't really remember exactly
I did a lot of drinking back then.

But it is definately worth it to pay a little more for quality. I saw some that were about $800.00 but my wife wanted this one.
She's very particular with her animals, it has to be a certain one. Go with your instincts, take a good look at them, and you will
know the right "one" when you see it. There's a sort of Karma just like buying a car.

I have a 7 month old English Bull, and I love him like my own son. He is a great dog- great with kids, great with adults, and great with other animals. He doesn't have a mean bone in his body! Never once has he snapped at anyone or bared his teeth.

He is a bit of a pussy though, for a "brave breed." He gets scared of just about everything, including a scarecrow that my neighbor had up for hallowell.

Oh, and smart, and stubborn! I had him trained to the point where he would go to his kennel when I told him, that lasted a few weeks, until he figured out that he wasn't getting a dog cookie any more. Now he waits until I get the cookie out, and he will go right in!

Bulldog

I have found if you choose the right breeder you can get a Bulldog that is a very healthy and (true) bulldog the bulldogs have been bred lately for the super big chest and extra large heads which for looks are Bad*ss but for health issues can create alot of problems.....
choose your breeder carefully my dog will jump 3 feet in the is air very athletic and has zero health issues.

I love my bully. She is extremely playful and loves to swim even though everyone always says they can't swim. She does get allergies though but other than that they are great dogs. definitely research your breeder.

GJ, bulldog, dasmasher....thank you for you pics and/or comments! You have some beautiful dogs!

Do any of you have suggestions for good breeders on the east coast? I am visiting a very respected kennel in December but any other information will definitely be used!

Thanks!

I bought my male from Carlos Woods in NC. He only breeds Oldies, but they are AWSOME.http://www.angelfire.com/ca2/CARLOSWOODS/

I bought my female from a Amish farmer in Lancaster PA. That probably why she is so healthy.lol With my friends that have bullies it seems that the more they paid, the more issue they have. But they are great dogs and wouldn't have it any other way.

Bro, the one on the left looks just like oscar! His teeth are always out because he has a long lower jaw. No issues with it though, he can eat just fine. That really could be him though, identical match!
