Nice DR. We gotta talk about spyware basics and hijacked browsers on here. I've been using Ad-Ware mostly, but occasionally I will break out hijackthis to hit troubled areas. What spyware software are you guys running?

I will get into how you can fix these problems yourselves in the near future via the registry (and safe mode if infected already). Quite simple, but I will get you guys used to working with the registry so you will be comfortable with it. It is necessary for you to gain knowqledge of this and not be afraid of it. As my personal motto goes in engineering, what one man can do, another man can do. (As Anthony Hopkins says in "The Edge") It's no mystery, it's logic.

Typing with one hand now that my other one is in a half cast.

Most of the things that start up are under these key using regedit.exe:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Once you work your way down the tree on the left. Before you change anything under this key you can right click the key on the left and select "Export". Save it to a registry file that you can double click it later to restore the previous settings. I usually have just a couple (2 or 3) things under these keys. Most of the time when someone has a problem from downloading free programs etc, these keys have alot of bullshit in them and need to get deleted so that the box gets it's original speed back again.

As an even better alternative you can download one of Mark Russinovich's tools that will show you all areas in one interface that are set to automatically start up:

I will continue to post sme helpful tips over the next couple of days. If you are not sure what something is that is in your strart up, post it here and I'll tell you what it does.

Do yourself a favor and check out the other tools Mark has coded on his site. Most are free and NONE have spyware attached.
