What do you find is the most comfortable position for military pressing barbells initial lift off. Bar in the front, bar in the back? Any tips on making this easier?

I seldom come across a gym where the bench is comfortable enough for me so that the lift off is not awkward. Perfect positioning for me would be slightly behind but not too far.

my shoulders don't like mil pressing with thumbs facing inwards and elbows out, i much more prefer DBs or the machines that have more the neutral angle grip (or close to it) to face the thumbs towards you and keep elbows in more... hope i explained it ok

I recently saw a post by Ben Pakulski and he made a great point. Your shoulder press bench angle should be positioned in a way that allows your forearms to be perpendicular to the ground without excessive stretch on the glenohumeral joint.

I like to be set so that as I look relatively straight ahead the bar just grazes my chin at the bottom of the rep.....I also move my elbows to the front rather than straight out to the sides during the rep.

Going behind my head tears up my shoulder joint just thinking about it........
But I also don't extend all the way up.

Playing D1 football for six weeks with a partially separated shoulder, thinking it was only a sore shoulder, continues to haunt me over 30 years later......oh the stupidity of being 19 years old! :banghead:

Hey Gren,

I like doing presses on the Hammer Shoulder Press, but I sit reverse
on the seat so I'm facing the back pad. This allows for the upward press
to go slightly forward and I've found that's helpful.

Or another fav is Smith Machine Behind The Neck Press.
I lower the bar to about mid-point behind my head, no deeper, and
they feel great. I avoided BTNP's for years thinking they would bother
my rotators, but found I am fine doing them this way.

For me the problem with DB Presses is grabbing them off the floor,
putting them on my knees and kicking them up into position. Anything
heavy, at least for me presents too much effort. I want my energy to
be in Pressing, not wrestling with the DB's.

I like doing mine in front and rarely ever do behind the neck because it has always been an awkward uncomfortable movement. Lately I have been concentrating on doing all my movements with DB's, including shoulder presses.

I've always have hard time pressing off a shoulder press bench to so either put up right bench or udjustable incline in the squat rack. When my shoulders are iffy I'll use incline on the highest setting without being completely 90°

I forgot about Standing Cage Presses which is a Meadows deal.
Check 'em out on YouTube, I like them as well.
